UCL Accommodation move-out reuse scheme

Before you move out, donate your unwanted items to UCL’s reuse scheme and give them a second life with future students.

1 May 2026

In 2025, students across UCL halls donated over 1,100kg of items in our move-out reuse scheme, from kitchenware and clothes to bedding and electronics. This has saved over an estimated 5,776 kgCO2e, equivalent to planting nearly 100 trees!*

The items were redistributed to new students at our Reuse & Relove event at the start of the new academic year or donated to charity, helping reduce waste and support others in the UCL community.

This initiative supports the Loop, a key campaign in UCL’s Sustainability Plan, which aims to tackle unsustainable consumption. By encouraging reuse, we are building a circular economy on campus, helping students cut down on cost and waste.

What can I donate?

From Monday, 18 May until Saturday, 20 June, if you live in a UCL hall (except for One Pool Street), you can pass on items you no longer need to your nearest hall donation point.

We accept the following in clean and working condition:

  • Books
  • Kitchenware, eg. cutlery, pots and pans, glassware (No knives or sharp items)
  • Small electricals, eg. lamps, hairdryers, hair tools (UK plug only and must not have batteries)

Impact so far

Reuse scheme 2025

During the summer move-out period, students from 20 UCL halls donated over 1,100kg of unwanted items, from clothes and kitchenware to bedding and electronics.

These items were distributed to incoming students or donated to charity, giving them a second life. This has saved over an estimated 5,776 kgCO2e, equivalent to planting nearly 100 trees!*

These savings come from avoiding the carbon impacts of both waste disposal and the manufacturing and distribution of new products.

Reuse scheme 2024

The scheme began as a trial in four UCL halls: Astor College, John Dodgson House, John Adams Hall and New Hall, resulting in a substantial 535kg of donated items.
