Christmas Switch-Off

Every year, UCL runs a Christmas Switch-off competition to see who can reduce the most energy over the winter break.

Help UCL reduce energy and win prizes by pledging by the 20th December to switch off this Christmas!

In 2023, over 400 pledges resulted in a combined saving of 100 tonnes of carbon – that’s equivalent to planting 1,677 trees!* This saved UCL an impressive £144,194 over the festive period.

It shows small changes in our everyday behaviours, like switching off non-essential equipment can lead to a huge impact.

How to get involved

Switch-off icon
Decide your switch-off actions - Use Sustainable UCL’s checklists to see what you could switch off. Do you work in an office? Make sure screens are switched off rather than on stand-by before you go on holiday. Staying in halls? Unplug the microwave before you leave.

How to win

Pledge icon
Make your switch-off pledge by December 20th. By pledging, you have the chance to win our Christmas Bundle Giveaway, which includes a Keep Cup, a plant-based cookbook, and Tony Chocolonely's chocolate! The department or accommodation with the highest proportion of pledges will also win £50 prize money!
