Environmental Volunteering opportunities
UCL has plenty of established environmental community projects or you could start your own.

UCLU’s Volunteering Services Unit
UCLU’s Volunteering Services Unit has lots of ways you can get involved with sustainable volunteering – they're linked with dozens of community organisations working to protect, celebrate and improve the environment.
There are on-going volunteering vacancies as well as lots of one-off events you can sign up for, and you can get funding and support for your own projects too.
Community projects
Here are a few examples of the sorts of organisations UCL students have been volunteering with.
- The Green Gym – keep fit whilst doing some hands-on conservation work.
- The Calthorpe Project - help out at this community-run organic garden and green oasis in the middle of Kings Cross.
- FoodCycle – use perfectly good food that would otherwise get thrown away, and use it to operate community cafes for people on low incomes.
- Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) - are looking for people to make the public go 'wow' by showing them and talking to them about the amazing wildlife of Hampstead Heath.
- Sustrans - the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity. Their vision is a world in which people choose to travel in ways that benefit their health and the environment.
- Thames 21 – take part in action days to improve the environment on the Thames’ shoreline.
- Stephen’s House & Gardens – visit this community-run historic house in north London, where monthly gardening groups improve the biodiversity of the site.
If you don’t want to make a regular commitment, why not try out one of their one-off volunteering events - they’ve usually got some sustainable community events coming up.
Student-Led Volunteering Programme
If you’ve got an idea for your own environmental project, you can get funding, training and support from the Volunteering Services Unit’s student leadership programme. Previous projects have included Junk in the Trunk, Roots and Shoots and Bentham’s Farm.
