The UCL Sustainability Team drives forward the university's key sustainability aims. We work with the UCL community to embed sustainability into research, buildings and behaviours at UCL, and beyond.
Our work improves sustainability literacy, increases efficiency, saves money and helps create more pleasant spaces to work and study. Find out more about what we do, and see our profiles below.
The Sustainability Team
- Richard Jackson: Sustainability Director
Since taking up his position at UCL in 2011, Richard has been leading the development and implementation of UCL's environmental sustainability strategy. This has included the development and management of UCL's Sustainability Team and its work to embed sustainability throughout UCL: working with the UCL Estate team to incorporate sustainability standards and targets into their refurbishment and maintenance activities; to encourage the UCL community to contribute to the sustainability objectives; and to integrate sustainability into research and teaching.
- Joanna Marshall-Cook: Senior Sustainability Manager (Energy and Carbon)
Joanna is leading our transition to a low carbon institution; engaging the UCL community to self-deliver sustainability, embedding carbon reductions into the Estates Transformation programme, and integrating circular economy principles throughout the organisation.
- Ben Stubbs: Senior Sustainability Manager (Built Environment)
Ben works across the UCL estate to make sure that our buildings are designed, built and operated as sustainably as possible. This helps us to improve our energy and carbon performance; use material and water resources more efficiently; optimise the working environment for our students and staff; and ensure that our facilities exceed expectations well into the future.
- Emma Shirbon: Environmental, Health and Safety Manager
Emma is the EHS systems manager, working with UCL estates to embed environmental, health and safety requirements into all aspects of their work (including noise mitigation, air quality improvements, reducing construction impacts). She oversees the Estates EHS Steering Group and regularly reports to the Director, Sustainability on progress against the EHS system requirements.
Emma works with Alex Jones who oversees the UCL Environmental Management System, ensurng the requirements of the ISO 14001: 2015 standard are embedded into UCL processes, monitoring compliance and driving continuous improvement.
- Tony Overbury: EHS Specialist
Tony is supporting the implementation of the ISO14001 environmental management system across the UCL estate. The particular focus of Tony’s work is to monitor the effectiveness of the system through internal audits of departments.
- Ciaran Jebb: Assistant Sustainability Manager (Energy)
Ciaran supports improvements to UCL’s energy management, through better monitoring and reporting of our energy consumption and carbon emissions, projects to increase the amount of renewable energy generated at UCL and smarter controls for building heating and cooling systems. He manages UCL’s £15m utilities budget and compliance with UCL’s legal obligations relating to carbon reduction, and is also responsible for promoting sustainable travel at UCL.
- Hannah Biggs: Sustainability Projects Lead
Hannah's role is to engage staff and students in UCL’s sustainability initiatives, to increase pro-environmental behaviour among the UCL community and to reduce UCL's environmental impact. She leads the design and coordination of a range of sustainability events, competitions and fairs and oversees the development of Green Impact and Student Switch-Off.
- Alex Jones: Environment, Health and Safety Officer
Alex works on managing and delivering UCL’s Environmental Management System, which includes identifying environmental impacts, supporting measures to minimise them, and engaging with departments to support the system. Alex also works closely with the central procurement team to ensure the goods and services that UCL purchases are responsible and have a low environmental impact.
- Martin Farley: Sustainability Labs Advisor
Martin works primarily with ‘wet-lab’ research spaces at UCL. Consuming up to 2/3 of the energy at UCL, laboratory buildings are a prime area to achieve energy and material savings. To accomplish this, Martin is helping run the laboratory’s portion or Green Impact, as well as running laboratory projects. His ultimate goal is to reduce the energy required to accomplish better quality research.
- Steve Shine: Logistics Manager
Steve provides logistics expertise for UCL Estates and primarily for the Transforming programme ensuring UCL's Construction Management Plan Strategy is followed in a sustainable manner.
- Alex Perry: Senior Communications Manager
