About Us

The UCL Sustainability Team drives forward the university's key sustainability aims. We work with the UCL community to embed sustainability into research, buildings and behaviours at UCL, and beyond.

Our work improves sustainability literacy, increases efficiency, saves money and helps create more pleasant spaces to work and study. Find out more about what we do, and see our profiles below.

Piet has been nominated by the Provost, to act as their representative as UCL’s accountable person for sustainability.

Richard Jackson: Sustainability Director

Since taking up his position at UCL in 2011, Richard has been leading the development and implementation of UCL's environmental sustainability strategy. This has included the development and management of UCL's Sustainability Team and its work to embed sustainability throughout UCL: working with the UCL Estate team to incorporate sustainability standards and targets into their refurbishment and maintenance activities; to encourage the UCL community to contribute to the sustainability objectives; and to integrate sustainability into research and teaching.

Joanna Marshall-Cook: Head of Sustainability Programmes

Joanna is leading our transition to a low carbon institution; engaging the UCL community to self-deliver sustainability, embedding carbon reductions into the Estates Transformation programme, and integrating circular economy principles throughout the organisation.

Ben Stubbs: Head of Sustainable Built Environment

Ben works across the UCL estate to make sure that our buildings are designed, built and operated as sustainably as possible.  This helps us to improve our energy and carbon performance; use material and water resources more efficiently; optimise the working environment for our students and staff; and ensure that our facilities exceed expectations well into the future.

Evan Landy: Sustainability Manager

Evan oversees UCL’s Environmental Sustainability Management System (ESMS) and The Loop. UCL’s ESMS is driven by the ISO14001:2015 standard and involves the Plan, Do, Check, Act approach to working. In a UCL Sustainability context this involves internal auditing & coordinating external auditors to check that what we do is in line with the standard, and to drive continuous improvement. The Loop focuses on purchasing and consumption and involves working with our supply chain to drive wide-ranging sustainability improvements.

Pip Jackson: Inclusive Environments Manager

Pip works across the UCL estate providing in-house expertise on all aspects of accessibility and inclusive-design in the estates management and facilities services for UCL. This includes embedding  the aims of the UCL Estates Inclusive Design Strategy into UCL's work.

Benedict Williamson: Assistant Sustainability Manager (Energy) (Paternity Cover)

Ben supports improvements to UCL’s energy management, through better monitoring and reporting of our energy consumption and carbon emissions, projects to increase the amount of renewable energy generated at UCL and smarter controls for building heating and cooling systems. He manages UCL’s £15m utilities budget and compliance with UCL’s legal obligations relating to carbon reduction, and is also responsible for promoting sustainable travel at UCL.

Hannah Biggs: Sustainability Manager (Education, Communication, Engagement, Wild Bloomsbury)

Hannah leads UCL’s sustainability behavioural change programmes, campaigns and communication channels, whilst supporting the organisation’s commitment to increasing biodiverse space by 10,000m2, and to embed sustainability into the informal and formal curriculum.

Martin Farley: Sustainability Labs Advisor

Martin works primarily with ‘wet-lab’ research spaces at UCL. Consuming up to 2/3 of the energy at UCL, laboratory buildings are a prime area to achieve energy and material savings. To accomplish this, Martin is helping run the laboratory’s portion or Green Impact, as well as running laboratory projects. His ultimate goal is to reduce the energy required to accomplish better quality research.

Steve Shine: Logistics Manager

Steve provides logistics expertise for UCL Estates and primarily for the Transforming programme ensuring UCL's Construction Management Plan Strategy is followed in a sustainable manner.

Paul Monk: Facilities Waste Manager 

Paul has management oversite of all waste, recycling and reuse services across UCL and works with staff, students, services providers and colleagues in Estates to managed waste as efficiently and sustainably as possible.

Stephen McKinnell: Bloomsbury Heat and Power Manager

Stephen is based at SOAS but manages the Bloomsbury Heat and Power (BHP) system which provides low carbon heat and electricity to a number of UCL buildings. He is currently working on the future strategy for the BHP system to improve its efficiency. Stephen also provides energy management support to the BHP members including UCL and is currently helping to develop a long term strategy for UCL’s other district heating network and provides technical energy advice for refurbishment and new building projects at UCL

Ben Humphreys: Building Management System, Energy Engineer

Ben works on improving the control of heating, cooling and ventilation in UCL’s buildings through our Building Management System.  He is helping to ensure that we provide a comfortable environment for staff and students while reducing the amount of energy we use.

Taras works on improving the control of heating, cooling and ventilation in UCL’s buildings through our Building Management System. He is helping to ensure that we provide a comfortable environment for staff and students while reducing the amount of energy we use.

Chiara Morfeo: Senior Sustainability Engagement & Communications Officer

Chiara leads on UCL’s sustainability campaigns and communication channels and manages UCL's sustainability engagement and behavioural change programme Green Impact.

Darius Filip: Plastics Reduction 

Darius is working with UCL’s key suppliers and waste management team to help us move towards becoming a single-use plastic free campus by 2024. By mapping all of our plastic usage and plastic reduction actions, we can understand where, what, and how we can change to have the biggest impact.

Joanna Socha: Strategic Projects Coordinator

Joanna is a strategic coordinator at the Students' Union UCL, where she works closely with the Chief Executive and members of the Leadership Team to take forward strategic projects, primarily coordinating the implementation of the Union's Sustainability Strategy.

Max Vidotto: Engagement Officer

Max leads on UCL's student and staff engagement programme including Green Impact. Max also plays an integral role in operating Sustainable UCL's events, including bike maintenance, clothes swaps, the Welcome Period and UCL's annual Sustainability Awards Ceremony.
