Professor Monica Lakhanpaul (UCL Great Ormond Street Institute for Child Health), co-host of Unlocking the SDGs podcast, was recently made an honorary Doctor of Science during De Monfort University’s summer degree ceremonies.
Professor Lakhanpaul was awarded with an honorary degree in recognition of her enduring partnership with DMU, and contributions to the local community in Leicester. She said:
“ “Leicester became my home and the people of Leicester became my family. They gave me the confidence and courage to be myself, find my way and take chances. They removed the red tape and the barriers that often stifle innovation and growth. The warmth and support from DMU, University of Leicester and the community of Leicester have had an influence on who I am today. When I questioned myself, I had so many people who believed in me.”
Professor Lakhanpaul’s work at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health has focused on addressing inequalities in children’s health outcomes, both in the UK and globally. This has included the Champions Project, which strengthened the partnership with De Montfort University and brought the lived experiences of children and families experiencing homelessness.
