Sign up for free UCL course on embedding sustainability in your teaching

Staff who are interested in integrating teaching about sustainability and climate change within their practice are invited to enrol in a free online course developed at the Development Education Research Centre, which is based within the IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education & Society. 

‘Educating for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Schools and Universities’ explores the global challenges facing sustainable development worldwide and how to introduce them in higher education institutions and schools. 

““The course is designed as an introduction to ideas around education, sustainability and climate change for educators who want to integrate these issues into their practice,” explained Dr Nicole Blum who developed the course with Dr Frances Hunt. “The course aims to support educators to prepare their students to take on the global challenges they will face now and in the future.”

This year’s course, which is hosted on Futurelearn, begins on 30 October 2023. It will be facilitated by Dr Blum and Dr Hunt for the first 3 weeks of the run, and can also be completed on-demand at any time. Participants need to commit three hours a week for three weeks. Last year around 1,300 people from 118 countries enrolled in the course. It was highly commended in the 2023 UCL Sustainability Awards.

The course was created with support from Sustainable UCL and complements efforts to increase education for sustainable development (ESD) across the university. Earlier this year, a network was set up for staff and students interested in sharing good practice around integrating ESD in teaching across UCL’s faculties.
