UCL organises a three-day residential summer school exclusively for D/deaf and hard of hearing students in year 11 and year 12 at local authority maintained schools.
During the Discover UCL Summer School, students attend academic taster sessions to get an idea of what being a UCL student is like, as well as the support available at UCL for D/deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
They also receive advice on applying to university, including writing a personal statement and the application process.
“Students get a taste of lectures and what it might be like being a deaf student at university, a better understanding of the kind of communication support they can use,” says Sanna, a student ambassador at the summer school. “They can also learn from other deaf people’s experience of university.”
Discover is run in collaboration with the UCL Deafness Cognition & Language Research Centre. All the sessions are run by deaf people and UCL provides specialised support, including British Sign Language Interpreters for the school’s duration.
