Tzu-Wen Wang (Julie) highlights some of the reasons why she came to study at the National Medical Laser Centre, Department of Surgery:
"I came to National Medical Laser Centre because of the recommendation from my supervisor: Dr. Pei-Jen Lou. He is one of the few researchers participating in Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) in Taiwan. The NMLC at UCL produces world renowned research on this area, and I was keen to join this group in order to continue research in the field and to learn more about PDT.
I am currently in the second year of my PhD under the supervision of Professor Stephen Bown and Dr Alexander MacRobert. My research project is entitled ‘New Strategies for Photochemical Internalisation (PCI)’. PCI is an extension of PDT which involves research in the field of drug delivery and drug development.
The Department of Surgery and the NMLC are well equipped with state of the art technology and instrumentation, not to mention the specialised acaedemics who are leaders in their field. I have attended and presented some of my preliminary results in two international conferences in 2007 under the support from the Graduate School Student Conference Fund.
It is my first time being away from home for such a long time, but I have been having a great time here. Everyone in the Department is so warm and yet professional. I hope that my training here will lead to my becoming a competent researcher."
