Centre for Biomaterials

Head: Dr Wenhui Song

This is an internationally renowned research Centre for the development of innovative materials that address real medical needs. The mission of our multidisciplinary team consisting of academics (cell biologists, chemists and material scientists) and clinicians, is to deliver clinical solutions through innovations of new biomaterials, scaffolds and devices. Our strength lies in:

  • Synthesis and characterisation of novel polymers, polymer composites, nanomaterials and nanocomposites.
  • Design, manufacture and characterisation of implants, scaffolds, nano-vehicles for drug delivery and devices.
  • Biofunctionalisation and modification of the physicochemical properties of materials to direct desirable biological interactions.

There a number of on-going projects in different stages of clinical and preclinical studies, such as cardiovascular grafts and stents, soft tubular organs, chronic wound healing materials, artificial cochlea and maxillofacial implants, funded by the Wellcome Trust, EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC, Osteoarthritis UK, BHF, UKIRI-DST and industry. The artificial vascular graft is currently undergoing clinical trials funded by the Wellcome Trust.

The Centre has state-of-the-art facilities for both synthesis, process and physico-chemical and biological characterisation which includes; polymer chemistry laboratory and biomanufacturing laboratory equipped with custom-made 3D printers, electrospinning/electrospraying equipment and vascular graft coagulation extrusion housed within a GMP/GLP environment.
