About this course

Our degree in French and Management Studies offers expert teaching and learning in both language acquisition and socio-cultural literacy, alongside comprehensive knowledge of management theory and practice, that will equip students to thrive in today’s global society.

Over the four years, you will deepen your knowledge of intercultural contexts and the French language, while developing critical thinking skills and a strong foundation in key areas of management such as organisational behaviour, marketing, strategic management, finance and entrepreneurship.

In Years 1, 2 and your final year, you take French language modules at the School of European Languages, Culture and Society, as well as cultural modules covering a range of topics that draw on literature, film, politics, history, and linguistics, from an interdisciplinary perspective. You also take modules in Management Studies, with an emphasis on personal and professional development, leadership skills, and the ability to navigate complex ethical and cultural environments in business. Please visit the UCL School of Management website for further details.

You will spend the third year of your studies abroad, either at a university or doing a work placement. You will achieve the same linguistic competence regardless of whether you start a language from beginner level or have previous knowledge of it.

Course structure

Your degree will be studied on a 50/50 ratio between French and Management Studies.

In each year of study at UCL, you take 60 credits of SELCS modules and 60 credits from Management Studies. In Year 1, the majority of modules are compulsory and help establish a broad foundation. In later years, you have fewer restrictions and have flexibility to pursue optional cultural modules, which may be language specific or interdisciplinary, as well as further optional management modules.

You spend the first two years at UCL gaining expertise in the productive and receptive skills of the French language, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of the culture and society of the countries where French is spoken. You also take core modules in management that introduce fundamental concepts and provide practical applications.

There is a compulsory year abroad in the third year of your studies, during which you may study at a partner university or undertake an approved work placement. The final year is based at UCL, where you study a range of advanced level modules. A final year dissertation module is available should you wish to undertake a self-initiated project which builds on the independent research skills developed during your studies.

We are keen to ensure that students feel part of our community at UCL and therefore offer course-specific core modules in Year 1 that students take together with their respective cohort. These offer an opportunity to share learning experiences and support students to make informed choices for future years of study. Please visit our Undergraduate Modules page for more details.

Modules

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 30-credit module is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Please note that the list of modules given here is indicative. This information is published a long time in advance of enrolment and module content and availability is subject to change. Modules that are in use for the current academic year are linked for further information. Where no link is present, further information is not yet available.

Compulsory

In Year 1, you take core French language modules, normally up to the value of 30 credits, accompanied by compulsory content modules (30 credits) relating to your chosen language. These modules help establish a broad foundation in French Studies and related disciplines such as literature, film, culture, history and linguistics. You also take core modules in Management Studies (usually 3 x 15 credit modules, 45 credits in total).

Optional modules

In Year 1, you select an additional management module (15 credits). For further details on management modules, please visit the UCL School of Management website.
