Electronic and Electrical Engineering (Nanotechnology) MEng

This four-year MEng explores the core mathematics, physics, programming, and electronic and electrical engineering behind modern technologies — from smart cities to renewable energy. Building on our BEng, the additional, fully-integrated fourth year allows you to study advanced topics at master’s level, preparing you for leadership roles or a future research career. This course offers the option of an additional year abroad, an industry placement or a specialised route in Communications, Computer Science or Nanotechnology.

About this course

This degree is designed for students seeking to master electronic and electrical engineering while gaining advanced specialist knowledge in Nanotechnology. 

Year 1 and Year 2 cover core fundamentals, with the flexibility to switch to the BEng or pursue Electronic and Electrical Engineering MEng pathways with a specialism in Nanotechnology.

Nanotechnology is at the heart of many of the most advanced electronic devices and systems currently manufactured and will enable many of the new innovations in quantum technology, healthcare and sustainable energy. You will take specialist modules on fabrication, physics, and applications and undertake projects in nanotechnology.

Project work is central to the programme, from early Engineering Challenges and week-long design scenarios, to a final-year team project tackling real-world engineering problems. 

As part of UCL’s Integrated Engineering Programme IEP, this degree combines specialist education with interdisciplinary teamwork. You will collaborate with other UCL Engineering students in interdisciplinary teams to tackle complex engineering problems. You’ll broaden your expertise through an IEP Minor — three related modules across Years 2 and 3 — in areas such as Data Science, Entrepreneurship, Robotics, or Environmental Engineering. 

You will graduate with the creativity, practical experience, and leadership skills needed to excel in industries shaping the technologies of the future.

Course structure

This pathway follows the standard MEng programme in Years 1 and 2 but gives students additional module options relating to the physics of nanotechnology in Years 3 and 4. The specialism reflects the research strength of the Electronic & Electrical Engineering Department in the field of nanotechnology and the Department’s involvement with the multidisciplinary London Centre for Nanotechnology at UCL. This pathway is not a joint degree, but some modules in Years 3 and 4 are taught by the UCL Department of Physics and Astronomy.   

In Year 3, students will take compulsory modules in Quantum Physics and Atomic and Molecular Physics. In Year 4, students will take the compulsory modules: Electrical Transport in Nanosystems,  Quantum Computation and Communication, and Molecular Physics. 

Modules

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 30-credit module is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

International undergraduate students benefit from a cohort guarantee unless indicated below, meaning that their tuition fees will not increase during the course of the programme, but UCL reserves the right to increase tuition fees to reflect any sums (including levies, taxes, or similar financial charges) that UCL is required to pay any governmental authority in connection with tuition fees.

Please note, in order to meet the Engineering Council requirements for an accredited degree which apply to all courses professionally accredited by the Engineering Council, across all universities, students on this course must pass all modules, with some possible specific exceptions for a limited number of optional modules. If a student fails a module, two attempts are permitted, and they may be eligible to transfer to a related non-accredited degree.
