About this course

This degree equips you with the skills and knowledge to develop technologies that address 21st-century challenges, from sustainable energy systems and robotics to quantum computing and healthcare innovation. You will gain a solid foundation in electronic and electrical engineering through hands-on learning and real-world problem-solving. 

Year 1 and year 2 focus on core engineering fundamentals while offering flexibility to transfer to an MEng pathway subject to performance and visa requirements. Practical experience is embedded throughout, including multidisciplinary engineering challenges, week-long design scenarios, and your final-year individual project. This project may involve original research or creating new software, systems, or devices. 

The Year in Industry takes place in Year 3 of this four-year degree. This option enables students to undertake a paid or unpaid placement with a professional organisation, gaining valuable real-world experience and applying academic knowledge in an organisational context.

As part of UCL’s Integrated Engineering Programme IEP, this degree combines specialist education with interdisciplinary teamwork. You will collaborate with other UCL Engineering students in interdisciplinary teams, to tackle complex engineering problems. You’ll broaden your expertise through an IEP Minor — three related modules across Years Two and Three — in areas such as Data Science, Entrepreneurship, Robotics, or Environmental Engineering. 

You will graduate with the creativity, practical experience, and leadership skills needed to excel in industries shaping the technologies of the future. 

Course structure

In Year 1 and Year 2 of the BEng most modules are compulsory as they cover the ‘core’ material that every Electronic and Electrical Engineer needs to be familiar with.

In Year 3, you will undertake a paid or unpaid placement with a professional organisation as part of your Year in Industry.

In Year 4 there is more flexibility, with a wide choice of optional modules offered to suit different interests. See below for further information.

In addition to the modules shown, during Year 2 and Year 4 you will also take an IEP ‘minor’, with one module in Year 2 and two modules in Year 4 on a specific engineering topic. Minors are offered by most departments in the UCL Faculty of Engineering Sciences and allow you to experience another branch of engineering as part of your Electronic and Electrical Engineering degree.

Modules

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 30-credit module is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

UK undergraduate fees for 2026/27 are subject to parliamentary approval and are for the first year only. Fees for subsequent years may be subject to increase: Student Terms and Conditions. UK fees are in line with the Government announcement on fee cap increases. Fees for 2027/28 entry will be published in August 2026.

International undergraduate students benefit from a cohort guarantee unless indicated below, meaning that their tuition fees will not increase during the course of the programme, but UCL reserves the right to increase tuition fees to reflect any sums (including levies, taxes, or similar financial charges) that UCL is required to pay any governmental authority in connection with tuition fees.

The cost of a year in industry can be difficult to predict as it will depend on the student’s own priorities and choices, as well as the location of the organisation they wish to use for the placement. Professional accreditation

Our BEng course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer CEng. Full satisfaction of the Engineering Council academic requirement for such professional registration would require one year of further accredited study at MSc level.

Note: in order to meet the Engineering Council requirements for an accredited degree which apply to all courses professionally accredited by the Engineering Council, across all universities, students on this course must pass all modules, with some possible specific exceptions for a limited number of optional modules. If a student fails a module, two attempts are permitted, or they may be eligible to transfer to a related non-accredited degree.
