The Engineering and Science Admissions Test
For the 2027 cycle, alongside the UCAS application, UCL will require all applicants to the above course to sit the ESAT (The Engineering and Science Admissions Test) run by University Admissions Tests UK. Applicants will be required to take Maths 1 and any two out of Physics, Maths 2, Chemistry and Biology paper from ESAT. There will be an entry fee for the test. You will gain a solid foundation in electronic and electrical engineering through hands-on learning and real-world problem-solving.
Year One and Year Two focus on core engineering fundamentals while offering flexibility to transfer to an MEng pathway subject to performance and visa requirements. Practical experience is embedded throughout, including multidisciplinary engineering challenges, week-long design scenarios, and your final-year individual project. This project may involve original research or creating new software, systems, or devices.
As part of UCL’s Integrated Engineering Programme IEP, this degree combines specialist education with interdisciplinary teamwork. You will collaborate with other UCL Engineering students in interdisciplinary teams, to tackle complex engineering problems. You’ll broaden your expertise through an IEP Minor — three related modules across Years Two and Three — in areas like Data Science, Entrepreneurship, Robotics, or Environmental Engineering.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds who demonstrate curiosity and enthusiasm for engineering and have a strong academic background in maths and science (preferably physics). You don’t need prior experience or specific skills in electrical engineering but examples of suitable activities to strengthen your application include hobbies like coding or robotics, participation in engineering workshops or summer schools, personal projects involving electronics, or relevant work experience.

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 30-credit module is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Teaching on this course blends traditional with highly innovative methods. You will attend lectures, seminars and laboratory classes, as well as hands-on workshops and e-learning sessions.
We were among the first universities in the UK to introduce a scenario-based learning approach. This enables you to put your learning into practice.
In Years One and Two you will attend tutorials to support your learning, whilst in Year Three you will have project supervision sessions with an academic member of staff.
The course includes an optional additional placement year in industry, where eligible students spend a year working on site with an approved industry partner organisation. This is usually UK-based but occasionally may be overseas.

The hours in your Year in Industry will be determined by your placement.

Additional costs
Students will need a laptop. Any fairly recent standard Windows machine is likely to be sufficient, and there is no requirement to purchase a high-specification model. Apple Macs can also be used. Chromebooks do not meet the course computing requirements.

Professional accreditation
Our BEng course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer CEng. Full satisfaction of the Engineering Council academic requirement for such professional registration would require one year of further accredited study at MSc level.
Note: in order to meet the Engineering Council requirements for an accredited degree which apply to all courses professionally accredited by the Engineering Council, across all universities, students on this course must pass all modules, with some possible specific exceptions for a limited number of optional modules. If a student fails a module, two attempts are permitted, or they may be eligible to transfer to a related non-accredited degree.
