Course structure
The Construction Project Management MSci is built around five compulsory module clusters: Industry, Management, Professional Practice, Technology, and Integration. In Years 3 and 4, you’ll also choose from three industry aligned specialisms: Project and Programme Management, Real Estate Management, and Design and Technology Management.
In Years 1 and 2, you’ll study compulsory modules that provide the theoretical foundation for construction project management and whole-life asset management. These cover topics such as managing people and organisations, construction ecosystems, digital technologies, commercial practices, law, contracts, sustainability, ethics, business economics, and data analytics. You’ll also work with digital design and planning tools and explore modern construction materials and techniques.
In Year 3, you’ll deepen your knowledge with two compulsory modules from the integration cluster and select two modules from each optional stream.
Year 4 focuses on leadership for transformative delivery, alongside a compulsory Dissertation/Capstone project and one further optional module.

After completing Year 2, students who choose the placement year option will undertake a one-year placement before returning to the University to continue with Years 3 and 4 of the course. In Year 3, you’ll deepen your knowledge with two compulsory modules from the integration cluster and select two modules from each optional stream.
Year 4 focuses on leadership for transformative delivery, alongside a compulsory Dissertation/Capstone project and one further optional module.

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 30-credit module is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

We use a variety of assessment methods including exams (both open and closed book), coursework, presentations, portfolios, online quizzes, group projects, and a final dissertation.
To support your progress, every module includes formative assessments which may include individual tasks, group exercises, debates, and presentations, along with helpful feedback from peers and staff.
Most modules combine different assessment types, and the weighting for each will vary depending on the module. This approach ensures you can showcase your understanding in ways that suit different learning styles.
Typical contact hours vary between 8–12 hours per week, depending on the year of study and module choice, and include lectures, seminars, practice-based activities and e-learning activities. Students will also display a level of independent study (25–30 hours per week), for example, by engaging with key topics and required readings in preparation for lectures and assessment.

During your placement year, you will work full time within a construction or built environment organisation, such as a contractor, consultancy, or client body. You will not attend university on a day-to-day basis but will remain in regular contact through structured academic support and reflective learning, ensuring your placement contributes to your academic and professional development.
