About this course

Construction is evolving rapidly, driven by new technologies, sustainability goals and the ambition to achieve net zero carbon. The construction industry needs future leaders who can shape this transformation, and the Construction Project Management MSci prepares you to be one of them. You join as an undergraduate, and graduate after four years with a master’s level qualification ready to enter the industry.

Throughout your degree you develop a comprehensive understanding of managing complex construction projects from start to finish, with hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of each stage of the process – from design development and procurement through to production and long-term management. With a focus on leadership, innovation, and sustainability, the Construction Project Management MSci prepares you to become a forward-thinking professional ready to tackle the challenges of modern construction and infrastructure.

You develop essential skills in project finance, legislation, and environmental impact. You also explore industry trends, technology, safety and quality, along with emerging areas like digital delivery, industrialised methods, and climate change.

To tailor your learning to your interests and career goals, you choose one of three industry aligned specialisms: Design and Technology Management, Project and Programme Management or Real Estate Management.

Course structure

The Construction Project Management MSci is built around five compulsory module clusters: Industry, Management, Professional Practice, Technology, and Integration. In Years 3 and 4, you’ll also choose from three industry aligned specialisms: Project and Programme Management, Real Estate Management, and Design and Technology Management.

In Years 1 and 2, you’ll study compulsory modules that provide the theoretical foundation for construction project management and whole-life asset management. These cover topics such as managing people and organisations, construction ecosystems, digital technologies, commercial practices, law, contracts, sustainability, ethics, business economics, and data analytics. You’ll also work with digital design and planning tools and explore modern construction materials and techniques.

In Year 3, you’ll deepen your knowledge with two compulsory modules from the integration cluster and select two modules from each optional stream.

Year 4 focuses on leadership for transformative delivery, alongside a compulsory Dissertation/Capstone project and one further optional module.

Modules

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 30-credit module is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Please note that the list of compulsory modules given here is indicative. Up to 10 optional modules per year are displayed for this course: this may not be the full range of optional modules available for selection. This information is published a long time in advance of enrolment and module content and availability is subject to change. Modules that are in use for the current academic year are linked for further information. Where no link is present, further information is not yet available. For more detail regarding module availability, please contact the department.
