Additional requirements for Civil Engineering with Year in Industry BEng

Students must meet the academic requirements to pass on to the next year and obtain approval from the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering for their chosen placement before progressing onto the Year in Industry. Students interested in the Year in Industry specialism are required to register their interest with the Year in Industry Tutor within the department. Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to secure a placement opportunity, and external factors may affect the availability of placements, or a student’s ability to undertake them, even where the academic criteria are met.

About this course

The UCL BEng in Civil Engineering equips you with the technical expertise and practical experience to tackle real-world engineering challenges.

Led by award-winning researchers and industry experts, this course combines hands-on, multidisciplinary projects with a strong foundation in core civil engineering principles. You’ll develop key skills in structural design, transport systems, environmental engineering, and construction management, preparing you to shape the built and natural environments in a rapidly evolving world.

We take a practical approach to our teaching, providing you with opportunities to tackle real engineering challenges which enable you to develop transferable professional skills.

The Year in Industry extends this degree to a four-year degree and takes place in Year 3. This option enables students to undertake a paid or unpaid placement with a professional organisation, gain valuable real-world experience, and apply academic knowledge in an organisational context. 

Course structure

Year 1 You will build a strong foundation in civil engineering principles, applied mathematics, and real-world problem-solving through Engineering Scenarios and Challenges. Gain hands-on experience during a residential field trip to Wales.  

Year 2 You will deepen your expertise with advanced civil engineering topics while choosing an IEP Minor from a diverse range of subjects. Enhance construction and project management skills through a bespoke field trip.  

Year 3 You will undertake a paid or unpaid placement with a professional organisation as part of your Year in Industry.

Year 4 You will specialise further with advanced core modules and continue your IEP Minor. Undertake an independent research project, applying your knowledge to solve a complex engineering problem.   All modules on this course are compulsory with the exception of the three minor modules (one module in Year 2 and two modules in Year 4), which can be selected from any of the available IEP minor subjects. Students also carry out a research project in Year 4, the topic of which can be agreed from a wide variety of research areas.

Modules

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 30-credit module is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

UK undergraduate fees for 2026/27 are subject to parliamentary approval and are for the first year only. Fees for subsequent years may be subject to increase: Student Terms and Conditions. UK fees are in line with the Government announcement on fee cap increases. Fees for 2027/28 entry will be published in August 2026.

International undergraduate students benefit from a cohort guarantee unless indicated below, meaning that their tuition fees will not increase during the course of the programme, but UCL reserves the right to increase tuition fees to reflect any sums (including levies, taxes, or similar financial charges) that UCL is required to pay any governmental authority in connection with tuition fees.

International fees shown are the fees that will be charged to 2026/27 entrants.

Additional costs for Civil Engineering with Year in Industry BEng

The anticipated cost for field trips is estimated at £500. Students are provided with equipment, including drawing kits, waterproofs and safety boots in their first year of study.

Year in Industry

Students who wish to explore the opportunities to undertake a year in industry should note that these may incur additional costs. The cost of a year in industry can be difficult to predict as it will depend on the student’s own priorities and choices, as well as the location of the organisation they wish to use for the placement. Associated costs may include travel and accommodation.
