About this course

The Health Technology post enrolment specialism teaches the business acumen, technical knowledge, and regulatory expertise essential for success in the rapidly expanding health tech sector. Students will examine emerging digital and medical technologies, understand health data and cybersecurity, and foster skills in digital transformation and health technology entrepreneurship. 

This course is ideal for students who want to understand how business principles can be applied to transform health and healthcare. As a business management degree with a health focus, it equips you with the skills to lead, innovate, and improve systems across the health sector.

Course structure

There are 4 compulsory modules in Year 2 (15 credits each) for all students:

  • Comparative Health Systems
  • Health Ethics
  • Principles and Practices of Project Management
  • Research Methods for Management and Health

There are 4 compulsory modules for Health Technology students in Year 2 (15 credits each):

  • Medical Innovation and Enterprise I
  • Medical Innovation and Enterprise II
  • Digital Health Technologies and Applications
  • Health Data and Cyber Security

Modules

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 30-credit module is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

The modules shown below are an indicative list of those currently available as part of the full degree. This includes modules that may be available before selecting a study option and those that may be available after a student moves onto the study option.

Compulsory modules

Teaching is delivered through lectures (which may feature guest speakers alongside UCL academics), seminars, group work and online learning via UCL’s virtual learning environment. You will also take part in weekly tutorials and case‑based activities that help you develop analytical and presentation skills. Project workshops support your investigative and data‑analysis skills, with opportunities to apply these to real‑world business and health contexts. You will have access to online learning tools where you can engage with UCL academics, guest speakers and fellow students.

A work placement is an option on the MSci in Business and Health. The work placement allows students to work full-time in a role relevant to their studies.

  • These work placements last at least six months and take place across the academic year before the final degree year on the MSci.
  • These fully assessed work placements are designed to build your professional and academic expertise.
  • Students receive academic credit, supervision and extra transferable skills.
  • Students will be expected to keep a journal throughout their placement where they record reflections from their theoretical learning and its application in the workplace.

Each week during Term 1 and 2, students will be expected to attend a two-hour online session where they will discuss themes that have come up in their workplace as well as discuss organisational development and awareness through sharing their various workplace experiences both in terms of opportunities and challenges.

In most cases, you will be placed in an organisation that will give you the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills in a professional environment. Work placements can be in the UK or abroad. Our academic and careers team will work with you to ensure you secure an appropriate work placement.

 

Assessments are carried out through a variety of methods, including examinations, essays, reports, presentations, literature reviews, critical appraisals and practical analyses. The balance of assessment types is designed to provide a manageable workload across the course, with modules assessed in the academic year in which they are taken.

Students will spend approximately 15 hours per week in structured, in‑person learning through seminars, lectures and tutorials. They are also expected to undertake around 25 hours of independent study alongside their in‑class activities, which include readings, videos and other online learning tasks.

UK undergraduate fees for 2026/27 are subject to parliamentary approval and are for the first year only. Fees for subsequent years may be subject to increase: Student Terms and Conditions. UK fees are in line with the Government announcement on fee cap increases. Fees for 2027/28 entry will be published in August 2026.

International undergraduate students benefit from a cohort guarantee unless indicated below, meaning that their tuition fees will not increase during the course of the programme, but UCL reserves the right to increase tuition fees to reflect any sums (including levies, taxes, or similar financial charges) that UCL is required to pay any governmental authority in connection with tuition fees.

As the Business and Health BSc/MSci launched for 2025/26 entry, we’re excited to shape our first cohort of graduates. Based on the course’s design and industry alignment, we expect graduates to have:
