How to choose your modules
Follow the steps to select your preferred modules in the My Studies area on Portico.
How to select your modules
- Log in to Portico and select My Studies in the navigation bar (Figure 1).
- Scroll down to My Modules (Figure 2) and select Module Selection.
- You can view compulsory modules in the Compulsory Modules section (Figure 3). These are automatically added to your record. If this section is empty, you have no compulsory modules.
- Scroll down to Choose credits (Figure 4) and select View List to choose your optional modules.
- View your chosen optional modules in the Selected Modules section (Figure 5) and select Save Selections.
- Scroll up to Useful Information and select Module Selection Draft Timetable.
- Check your draft timetable for clashes and check your module locations to ensure you have sufficient travel time between campuses (Figure 6).
- Clashes (i.e. two teaching events at the same time where no alternatives are available for either module). Clashes are outlined in red.
- Module locations: Events at UCL East have a dark blue border. Select the location icon for each event to view the location. We recommend an hour to travel between Bloomsbury and UCL East. If you have additional accessibility needs, you may need longer. Most UCL East timetabling won’t be visible until Summer 2026. Please check your draft timetable regularly in this period in case of any module clashes.
- If you have clashes or do not have sufficient time to travel between campuses, you should change your module selections, save, then re-check the timetable. Your department can help you understand your timetable if required.
- When you have chosen all your modules, select Submit Selections (Figure 7) and then Done to send your choices to your department for approval. You must complete this submission for your department to approve your selections.
Issue: Selection not valid
If a Selections Not Valid message appears (Figure 8), this is often because selection criteria have not been met. Read these details and check the conditions in each module container (making sure you meet each requirement) before resubmitting your selections.
How to change after submission
You can request to change your optional modules after submitting them. Go to My Studies and select Change module next to the optional module you want to change (Figure 9). This can be done until the deadline for module selection.
After this, you will need to wait until module reselection opens (in mid-July, for continuing students) or you can contact your department for support.
