Job DescriptionWhy apply?
Our Transition and Senior Mentors play an important role in helping new students settle into life at UCL and feel part of their department community.
As a mentor, you will:
- Contribute to supporting new students as they transition into university life
- Develop valuable skills such as leadership, communication and teamwork
- Gain experience that strengthens your CV and HEAR record
- Make a positive impact within your department and student community
- Work in a paid role with flexible hours that fit around your studies
- Receive training and ongoing support from the Transition Team
Application process
If you are considering applying for the 27/28 academic year, you will need to complete the following steps.
Step 1. Review the job descriptions
Before applying, please review the job description and person specification linked above carefully to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria.
Step 2. Apply online
Complete and submit the online application form.
If you previously worked as a Transition Mentor or Senior Mentor, you will still need to submit a new application. You may apply for both roles, but you will only be appointed to one position.
Top tips for a strong application
- Read the job description and person specification carefully.
- Draft your answers in a Word document and proofread before submitting.
- Avoid repeating the job description - we want to understand what makes you stand out.
- Include clear examples that demonstrate your skills and experience.
- Stick to the word count limit.
Please write your responses in your own words and avoid using AI tools such as ChatGPT. We review a large number of applications each year and want to hear your voice and experiences.
Step 3. Shortlisting
Your application will be reviewed against the criteria outlined in the Person Specification. Candidates who best match the criteria will be shortlisted.
Departments will then review shortlisted candidates and make final selections. All UCL selection panel members complete Fair and Inclusive Recruitment training to ensure an equitable recruitment process.
Step 4. Your application outcome
You will receive an email confirming the outcome of your application by early July.
Successful applicants
If successful, you will be appointed as a Transition or Senior Mentor, subject to:
- A successful Right to Work check
- Completion of mentor training
Reserve mentors
You may be offered a place on the Reserve Mentor list.
Reserve mentors may be contacted during Term One if a mentor withdraws from the programme or additional mentors are needed. If called upon, you will be paid for the training you complete and any sessions you deliver.
You can opt out of the reserve list at any time by emailing transition@ucl.ac.uk.
Unsuccessful applicants
We encourage you to explore support from UCL Careers, who provide guidance on job applications and employability skills.
Due to the high volume of applications, we are unable to provide individual feedback.
Step 5. Next steps
If you are successful, you will receive instructions on how to:
- Register with Unitemps
- Complete Right to Work checks
Compulsory mentor training takes place virtually in late summer / early autumn and includes:
- An online Moodle training module
- A 2-hour live training workshop
