Get your gown and photos ready

Wearing academic dress (cap and gown) is one of the most recognisable traditions of graduation. Those who complete their expression of interest will be invited to book their gown, photography and guest tickets on the Graduation Portal. All graduates crossing the stage must wear the correct academic dress for their award.

Collecting your gown

You can collect your gown on the day of your ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall.

Gown collection opens during your designated check in period. This will be confirmed to you via email about a week before your ceremony via email.

When collecting your gown:

1. Check in at the venue and get your QR ticket scanned.
2. Collect your gown from the gowning area.
3. Staff will help you put on your gown before the ceremony.

You cannot collect your gown before your check in period opens.

Returning your gown

If you have rented your gown, you must return it on the same day as your ceremony, unless you have arranged extended hire. If your ceremony takes place after 3pm, you may return your gown on campus by 11am the following day.

You can return your gown:

• At designated drop-off points in the Royal Festival Hall after your ceremony
• At the gown return point on campus if you continue your celebrations there. See the Graduation Checklist for specific timings and locations. 

Late returns may result in additional charges. 

What to wear

Graduation ceremonies are formal occasions, so please wear smart clothing under your gown.

Recommended:

• shirts, dresses or other smart clothing
• traditional or national dress.

Please avoid:

• shorts
• denim
• trainers.

Wear appropriate footwear for walking up and down steps during the ceremony.

Please note that flowers are not allowed inside the auditorium, so we recommend not bringing them to the venue.

Ceremony photos and video

Our photography supplier also offers:

• a photo of you crossing the stage
• a 15-second video of your stage moment
• a full recording of the ceremony.

These can be purchased through the Graduation Portal.
