Study Dutch online with UCL in one-to-one lessons or small groups, from beginner to advanced level, plus specialist courses in business, medical and historical Dutch.
Learn Dutch online with UCL
Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders).
All tutors speak Dutch and/or Flemish as their first language, and hold a MA/PhD in Dutch language and literature.
Course materials are available online and can be downloaded. All exercises and tasks are corrected by your tutor.
After successful completion of the course, you will receive a UCL completion certificate.
All courses are delivered fully online and are open to learners anywhere in the world.
You can study either one-to-one or in a small group, except for the following courses which are taught on a one-to-one basis only:
One-to-one courses are flexible and can be adapted around work, study or family commitments. You agree the day and time of each lesson with your tutor, and lessons may take place during the day or evening.
Small-group classes take place on a fixed day and time and usually include three to six participants.
You should complete your course before the end date confirmed by your tutor after registration.
Individual classes cannot continue beyond the agreed grace period. Extensions are only granted if a medical certificate is provided to the course administrator.
All courses are aimed at suitable candidates worldwide who are aged 18 or over and who:
- are self-motivated and enjoy distance learning
- are capable and independent language learners
- have an interest in the Netherlands and Belgium

Even after your classes have ended, you will continue to have access to the online course materials.
You can register for your preferred course at the top of each course page.
Once your registration is complete, your tutor will contact you with all course information. You will be asked for your preferred start date and will receive your login details for the course materials.

List of courses
Beginners
Learn the foundations of Dutch through Beginners 1 and 2, developing basic speaking, reading, writing and listening skills for everyday situations. Equivalent to CEFR levels A1 and A2.
Intermediate
Build confidence in Dutch through Intermediate 1 and 2, strengthening speaking, listening, reading and writing while exploring Dutch and Flemish culture. Equivalent to CEFR levels B1 and B2.
Advanced
Develop advanced Dutch language skills through discussion, reading and writing at academic level while deepening your understanding of Dutch and Belgian culture. Equivalent to CEFR level C1.
Early Modern
Learn to read Dutch and Flemish texts from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, including language from the Dutch Golden Age. Suitable if you have prior or no knowledge of Dutch.
Business
Develop Dutch reading skills for professional/business contexts, such as newspapers, magazines & economic commentary from the Netherlands/Belgium. Suitable if you have prior or no knowledge of Dutch.
Medical
Develops the Dutch language skills and specialised vocabulary required for medical study or work in the Netherlands or Belgium. Suitable if you are equivalent to B1 CEFR or higher in Dutch.
Grammar
Develop a thorough understanding of Dutch grammar or strengthen existing knowledge through focused study of language structures/usage. Suitable if you are equivalent to A0(+) to A2(+) CEFR in Dutch.
Self-Access Centre
Access films, documentaries, lectures and language-learning tools online through the UCL Self-Access Centre. Available to UCL students and staff.
