Welcome to the UCL Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE).
We offer courses for: preparing for university, current UCL students, undergraduates from around the world, as well as language courses and English language teaching qualifications.
Preparing for university
Courses for international students preparing for degree study at UCL or another UK university. They include year-long preparation routes, shorter Pre-sessional English courses for UCL offer holders, and a summer course that introduces younger students to university study.
Undergraduate Preparatory Certificates
The Undergraduate Preparatory Certificates (UPC) are UCL's international foundation year.
International Pre-Master's
For international students preparing for a postgraduate degree at a leading UK university. Develop the academic and English language skills required for successful postgraduate study.
Pre-sessional English courses
For international students with an offer to study a UCL degree who need to meet their English language requirement. Improve your academic skills, language and knowledge to succeed on your UCL degree.
Pre-University Online Course for High School Students
Two-week online course for high-school students aged 16–18 considering applying for a UK undergraduate degree. Develop your academic and English skills while exploring UCL and UK academic culture.
Current UCL students
We support UCL students through their studies.
You can get academic communication support, take credit-bearing language, EAP or BSL modules as part of your degree, or join academic English courses for graduate research students.
UCL Academic Communication Centre (ACC)
The ACC supports UCL students to develop their academic language and literacies. We work with students across faculties, of all language backgrounds.
Modules as part of your degree
Credit-bearing modules in nine modern foreign languages, English for Academic Purposes and British Sign Language, available to UCL and University of London students as part of their degree.
Academic courses for Postgraduates
Develop your academic writing, speaking and reading skills through Academic English, Academic Reading in French, German and Italian, and British Sign Language courses.
Undergraduates from around the world
Spend your summer studying at UCL in London.
UCL Summer School
Every year, UCL welcomes students from universities around the world to study for three or six weeks in July and August.
Summer English Course for International University Students
Improve your English language skills while experiencing the social and cultural highlights of London during your August university break.
Open to all
We offer continuing professional development (CPD) courses that are open to everyone, whether you’re a UCL student, member of staff or member of the public.
Language courses (evening and online)
Learn a new language or build your confidence in one you already know. Our courses focus on practical communication, cultural understanding and steady progress at a level that suits you.
Evening language courses
We offer evening language courses to help you communicate effectively in eight different languages. We have classes for everyone, from beginners to advanced learners.
Online Dutch
Study Dutch online with UCL in one-to-one lessons or small groups, from beginner to advanced level, plus specialist courses in business, medical and historical Dutch.
Cambridge teaching qualifications
Gain a recognised qualification for teaching English to adults. These courses combine teaching practice, feedback and language awareness, helping you start teaching or develop your existing experience.
Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
Train to teach English with the CELTA, a widely recognised qualification for teaching English as a foreign language. Gain practical classroom skills and an internationally respected credential.
Cambridge DELTA (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
A level seven qualification to develop and advance your knowledge of language and teaching practice. For English language teachers with an initial teaching qualification and two years’ experience.
