Applying for accommodation
The UCL Accommodation Portal opens at the end of March each year. Once you’ve firmly accepted your offer to study, you should book your room or submit your accommodation application before the deadline.
The deadline is 10 June for undergraduates and affiliates, and 30 June for postgraduates.
To meet the eligibility criteria, undergraduates must confirm UCL as their firm choice. If UCL is your insurance choice, you will not be eligible to apply for UCL Accommodation, and we would suggest booking a room in urbanest Canary Wharf if available or finding alternative accommodation. You can find resources to help you with your search on our Alternative Accommodation for Students webpage.
The application deadlines are 10 June (for Undergraduates and Affiliates) and 30 June (for Postgraduates).
If you apply after the deadline, you will not meet our eligibility criteria and can apply for the waiting list. Exceptions will be made if you are under 18 years old, or if you have additional requirements.
You can also consider making a booking at urbanest Canary Wharf, UCL's newest hall, or consider other alternative options.
If you apply after 10 June (for Undergraduates and Affiliates) or after 30 June (for Postgraduates) you will have missed the deadline and can apply for the waiting list. Exceptions will be made if you are under 18 years old, or if you have additional requirements.
If you have missed the deadline, we recommend making a booking at urbanest Canary Wharf (UCL's newest hall), or finding alternative accommodation. You can find useful resources and information to help you with your search on the Alternative Accommodation for Students webpage.
For 2026-27, UCL will guarantee an offer of accommodation to all full-time, first-year undergraduate students who are studying at UCL for the first time. The guarantee applies to individual applicants only (not as part of a couple or family) who apply before the deadline and meet the eligibility criteria.
First-year, full-time, international postgraduate students will be prioritised for a place in halls if they apply before the deadline and meet the eligibility criteria. International students refers to students with an Overseas fee status. If you're paying Home fees, you won’t be eligible for a prioritised place.
If you do not meet the eligibility criteria you can make a booking at urbanest Canary Wharf (UCL's newest hall), or find alternative accommodation. You can find useful resources and information to help you with your search on the Alternative Accommodation for Students webpage.
If you are a current student and have additional requirements, you can apply for a place in UCL halls beyond your first year. Applications will be considered by the Medical Cases Panel and reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
When you log in to the portal, the rooms you see are the ones currently available at that moment. This list doesn’t reflect our full accommodation pool, as rooms are released at different times throughout the process. Some room types are also held back to ensure we can support students with specific requirements.
Availability updates in real time, so options may change while you’re browsing. You might see more choices by exploring different weekly rent ranges or adjusting the slider on the Room Type Options page to the maximum. We do recommend having a clear budget in mind so you don’t overstretch yourself.
If you see a room you’re happy with, we encourage you to book it straight away to secure your accommodation. You can wait for other rooms to appear, but please note there’s no guarantee that your preferred room type will become available. You may also find that when you log back into the portal, the options you saw before may no longer be available. Each student will receive one room offer during the process.
If you apply after 10 June (for Undergraduates and Affiliates) or after 30 June (for Postgraduates) you will have missed the deadline, and will not hear from the Accommodation Office until the second week of September. Exceptions will be made if you are under 18 years old, or if you have additional requirements.
If you have missed the deadline, we recommend booking a room at urbanest Canary Wharf, UCL's newest hall (subject to availability), or securing alternative accommodation. You can find useful resources and information to help you with your search on our Alternative Accommodation for Students webpage.

International Students
Accommodation prices are the same for all applicants.
For UCL and urbanest halls, if you are unable to arrive on your contract start date, you must complete and submit a Late Arrival Notification via the UCL Accommodation Portal. This will ensure that your room is held open for you. Late arrivals will still be invoiced from the contract start date.
If you do not arrive in the first week and have not notified us of your late arrival, your offer will be withdrawn, even if you have paid your prepayment.
If you are arriving late at Unite St Pancras, a University of London Hall or Venti House, you are required to notify the provider directly.
In most cases to obtain proof of address, you will require a Statement of Student Status from UCL. A standard Statement of Student Status confirms your enrolment status, mode of attendance, programme of study, programme start and end date, and your home and term-time address.
A Statement of Student Status and/or bank letter can be obtained from your Portico account after you enrol.
If you are requesting a landlord reference, please ask your Hall Team after you check in.
If you have received an offer of accommodation, you may provide the address of your hall. If you have not yet received an accommodation offer you can use:
University College London, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT
Yes. For UCL and urbanest halls, once you have accepted your accommodation offer, you should submit an Early Arrival Request on the UCL Accommodation Portal. If your early arrival request can be met, you will be invoiced for the additional night(s) on your Portico account after you arrive. The charge for early arrival applies to all residents regardless of the reason for the Early Arrival.
If you submit the Early Arrival Request, you must check with the Hall Team if you do not receive an email response.
Disabilities and Health Conditions
Yes, we do. It is worth noting that some of these halls can be a fair distance from other parts of UCL which may need to be taken into consideration. Where appropriate, a preliminary visit to view the accommodation can be arranged.
You should outline your requirements in your application. If you are diagnosed after applying, you can contact the UCL Accommodation Office directly. In an email you should outline your condition, how the condition affects your accommodation requirements, and provide supporting medical evidence.
The information you provide will be treated confidentially and is processed by UCL with your consent. It will be shared on a ‘need-to-know’ basis with the Student Support and Wellbeing Services team. This will help them to offer you appropriate support during your time at UCL.
Student Support and Wellbeing Services includes Student Disability Services and Student Psychological Services. You do not have to take up this support but UCL has a duty of care to its students, especially those living in its accommodation.
You should also discuss your requirements with the UCL Student Disability Services to obtain further advice.
A Risk Assessment will be carried out by the Hall Team within one week of arrival.
There is more information on our Students with Additional Requirements page.
If you require a refrigerator (fridge) in your room for health-related reasons, which you have previously notified the Accommodation Office about, you will need to contact the Hall Team. The Hall Team will arrange for a fridge to be put into your room.
If you have not previously notified us about your requirement for a fridge for health-related reasons, you will need to contact the Accommodation Office and outline the details of your health condition and requirement for a fridge. You will need to include supporting evidence with your request.
UCL is committed to providing an inclusive environment and providing reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities. Where possible and if suitable accommodation is available, Assistance Dogs will be welcome, subject to relevant risk assessments.
On the grounds of health and safety responsibilities to our staff, students, and visitors, UCL reserves the right to refuse access for a dog if it does not meet certain criteria.
Please refer to UCL’s policy on Assistance Dogs for more information.
Couples and family accommodation
UCL has limited availability of couple or family accommodation and therefore cannot guarantee accommodation for students applying for this type of a place.
International Hall has a small number of flats available for couples and those with children.
There are some private halls and housing associations who can assist with couples and those with children. Places are limited, so we would advise you to get in touch with them as soon as possible:
Students with children are advised not to bring them to London until firm arrangements for accommodation are in place.
If both partners are UCL students, both partners will need to accept the accommodation offer and make pre-payments.
Where one partner is not a UCL student, the UCL student will need to accept the offer and make a pre-payment.
Invoices for accommodation will come in 4 instalments for students on a 51 week contract length.
If both partners are UCL students, both partners will be individually invoiced for half the accommodation rate each.
Where one partner is not a UCL student, the UCL student will be invoiced for the entire accommodation and the invoice will be split into two parts, for each half of the flat, for each term.
If you wish to arrive before your contract start date, you will need to submit an Early Arrival Request after you have accepted your offer. If your early arrival request can be met, you will be invoiced for the additional night(s) after you arrive. The charge applies regardless of the reason for the early arrival.
Where one partner is not a UCL student, the UCL student will need to submit the early arrival request.
Room allocation
For 2026–27:
- Students without additional requirements, not applying for an affordable room, and applying for individual/single hall places will be able to self‑select a room that suits their budget and preferences, subject to availability.
- Students with additional requirements, students applying for an affordable room, and students applying for couple or family flats will have their applications reviewed by the Accommodation Office, who will allocate the rooms that best meet their needs.
Due to high demand, only one offer will be made per student.
Yes. Students under 18 will only live in following halls:
You will be able to self-select your room type during the application process. Please note that we are unable to allocate twin rooms to under 18s.
Most halls are either undergraduate or postgraduate only, but some do house both undergraduates and postgraduates. The full breakdown is available on the UCL Halls webpage.
We cannot share details of your flatmates with you prior to arrival due to data protection laws. You will meet them on your check-in day.
Due to high demand, only one offer of accommodation will be made per person. We recommend you accept your offer, as all the halls will have easy access to public transport links. You can also consider a room swap after you move in.
Swap Requests can be submitted via the UCL Accommodation Portal for students ‘in room’ in a UCL or urbanest hall from Monday 12 October 2026. Swap requests are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed so we advise you to consider carefully the terms of your Licence/Tenancy Agreement. You can also submit a direct swap request i.e., to swap with another student of the same student type e.g., UG to UG, PG to PG, who is also in room, in a UCL or urbanest hall.
Accepting your accommodation offer
For UCL and urbanest halls, to accept your accommodation offer, you must:
• Log-in via the Accommodation Portal
• Click on Application and continue with the application for the term session you have been allocated for
• The next page will be Accept Offer
• Read through and follow the instructions on this page

Yes. If your accommodation offer for a UCL or urbanest hall has been withdrawn and you still require a place, you should contact the UCL Accommodation Office as soon as possible after you have received notification that the offer has been withdrawn to enquire if your offer can be reinstated.
We are unable to guarantee that the offer can be reinstated, so we suggest that you also look into Alternative Accommodation options. If you have been offered a place at Unite St Pancras, a University of London hall, or Venti House, you will need to contact the provider, to enquire if the offer can be reinstated.
For UCL and urbanest halls, you must have an internet connection in order to make a booking or review your accommodation offer on the UCL Accommodation Portal. Your offer cannot be accepted over the phone or in writing, it must be accepted online.
We recommend that you share your UCL Accommodation Portal log-in details with a trusted friend or family member if you won't have reliable internet during this time. This way, they can regularly review the UCL Accommodation Portal and accept your offer if you are unable to do so yourself.
If you do not accept your offer by the deadline, your offer will be withdrawn, and we cannot guarantee that it can be reinstated.
Because of high demand, students can self-select or receive one accommodation offer. If you’re not happy with your room, you have two options:
- Complete the booking to secure your place first. From 12 October 2026, the room swap option opens on the Accommodation Portal for students ‘in room’ in UCL and urbanest hall locations, where you can request a one-way swap or a swap with another student. Swap requests are not guaranteed and depend on availability. Students with health‑related or financial reasons are prioritised. If you have accepted a place with Unite St Pancras, the University of London or at Venti House, you will need to liaise with the provider about their own room swap process steps.
- Cancel your booking and find other accommodation. For UCL and urbanest hall locations, if you receive your Booking Reserved Email before 13 August 2026, you will enter a 14‑day Cooling Off Period from the date the Booking Reserved Email is received. If you cancel your booking on the Accommodation Portal within 14 days from receiving your Booking Reserved Email, your prepayment will be refunded. If you cancel after the Cooling Off Period, or if you receive your Booking Reserved Email on or after 13 August 2026, you can still cancel by contacting the Accommodation Office team, but your prepayment will not be refunded. If you have accepted a place with Unite, the University of London or at Venti House, you will need to liaise with the provider about their own cancellation terms.
For UCL and urbanest halls, you can find instructions for how to make prepayment on our Fees, guidance and payment webpage.

You are welcome to have friends and family stay over. During the day, you can have multiple guests. Overnight guests can stay for a maximum of seven nights in a calendar month.
Guests will need to be signed in and out. For everyone’s security, please notify your Hall team in advance of any visitors.
It is possible to request an extension to the payment deadline stated on your accommodation invoice. You must do so before the payment is due. The UCL Accommodation Office team may allow you to defer your payment for up to 30 days, as long as it is no later than two weeks before the last day of term. Please note, you will be expected to explain why you cannot make the original payment deadline.
To request an extension to your invoice deadline, please:
1. Log in to askUCL
2. Log an enquiry selecting the category Request for Hall Fees Deadline Extension and complete the form (only available for students that have their user ID).
For UCL and urbanest halls, it is possible to set up an instalment plan, i.e. monthly payments, to pay your invoice. You must do so before the payment deadline. The first instalment date should be the original due date. The final instalment payment date must be no later than two weeks before the last day of term.

It is your responsibility to find a suitable replacement student to take over your Accommodation. The full terms of your licence agreement can be found in the General Regulations. If no replacement student is found, your liability will continue until your contract end date.
The replacement must:
- be a UCL student.
- not currently live in UCL allocated accommodation.
- apply for UCL Accommodation.
- be at the same study level as you, meaning a postgraduate can only be replaced by another postgraduate, and an undergraduate by another undergraduate.
For UCL and urbanest halls, all students will be invoiced within two weeks of checking in to their accommodation. The payment deadline will generally be two weeks from receiving the invoice.

Student Support and Wellbeing Services (SSWS) provides a free, confidential, and judgement-free space to discuss any issues that may be affecting your ability to study. You can access support online through askUCL, in person in Bloomsbury and UCL East, and on the Support and Wellbeing Phone Lines (available 24/7).

Accommodation beyond the first year
Yes, full-time students can book a room in brand-new accommodation in Canary Wharf, which is being co-delivered by urbanest and UCL. Located on the edge of Canary Wharf, the building is a 10-minute walk from UCL School of Management and is well connected to public transport links, making it easy to travel to Bloomsbury and UCL East.
Returning students can self-select either a Single Ensuite or Accessible Studio, with spaces available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Current students with additional requirements, such as a health condition or disability, can also apply for a place in UCL Accommodation after the first year. The Medical Cases Panel will consider applications on a case-by-case basis. We will also consider students who are under 18 at the start of their next session.

Alternatively, you could explore private accommodation options, such as renting a room in a shared house or other private student accommodation. We recommend visiting our Alternative Accommodation webpage, where you can find resources to help you with your search. Plus, the Students' Union UCL offers a Flatmate Finder tool to help you find other UCL students to live with, or spare rooms listed by other UCL students.
London is a big city and there are lots of accommodation options available. Prices tend to depend on location, and living closer to the centre is typically more expensive.
We recommend that you look into alternative accommodation options to secure housing as early as possible. The housing marketing in London is extremely competitive and demand will increase as it gets closer to the start of term. From UCL, we offer urbanest Canary Wharf, a brand-new hall available to all current full-time students, regardless of level of study. Rooms can be booked via the Accommodation Portal now.
