3. Your hall

8. Jobs & discounts
9. Your safety

The friendly team in your hall are here to help you during office hours, 8am-7pm from Monday-Friday, and 9am-5pm on Saturdays.*
While you’re in halls, you’ll get regular emails from your Hall Team and UCL Accommodation telling you important information.
When things need to be fixed, the maintenance team will be working in halls.
If the repair is in your room, they’ll knock on your door three times before entering. If you’re out, the maintenance team co-ordinate with the Hall Team to get access while you’re away so they can fix the issue before you get home.
Please help the cleaning team by keeping shared spaces clean and tidy. This includes emptying any full rubbish (trash) bins in your flat or corridor into the large bins (dumpsters) at your hall.
Student Residence Advisers (SRAs)SRAs are postgraduate students who live with you in halls. They are there to support your wellbeing and help build the hall community. More information on SRAs in section 6!
AmbassadorsAmbassadors are fellow students who are here at the start of term to help you move in and can answer any questions you might have about life at UCL. They’ve lived in halls before and done at least one year of study, so they’re a great resource!
Contact usSpeak to your Hall Team at reception or use askUCL.
Stay up to dateSee the latest news about halls by following @UCLAccommodation on Instagram. Tag us in your posts and stories about halls so we can share them with your fellow residents!
*At Unite or urbanest sites, some information may differ.
2. Your roomInventoryYou’ll find the inventory form online on the UCL Accommodation Portal under the Room Condition section. Please complete this within 48 hours of moving into your hall. It’s important to check your inventory thoroughly. Record anything that seems missing or damaged, otherwise you may be charged for it at the end of the year.
Decorating your roomThere are lots of ways to personalise your room. You can put posters on non-painted surfaces such as pinboards, wardrobes and shelves. Fire hazards like candles, fan heaters, cooking equipment and mains-powered fairy lights are not permitted. A full list can be found in UCL Accommodation General Regulations.
Room inspectionsThe Hall Team carries out termly room inspections to check for any issues, damages, and health and safety hazards, such as prohibited items. The inspections take around 5 minutes and we will email you in advance to let you know when the room inspections will take place.
Inviting friendsDuring the daytime you can have guests in your room. Visitors should leave by midnight unless they are an overnight guest.
You can have one guest in your room overnight at a time, staying a maximum of seven nights in a calendar month.
For everyone’s safety and security, please email your Hall Team in advance with names and dates of visitors. All visitors need to bring picture ID, and for fire safety, all guests must sign in when they arrive.
Window restrictionsYour window may be fitted with a restrictor that limits how far it opens. It’s there for your safety and it is important that it is not damaged or removed by you or anyone else. If the restrictor becomes damaged, please tell your Hall Team straight away so it can be fixed.
3. Your HallPaying your feesYou pay your Accommodation Fees termly through Flywire’s payment portal, which is accessible through Portico. We send an invoice email with details on how to pay. If you’re facing financial hardship and can’t pay the full term’s rent in advance, you may be able to pay in up to three instalments. Log an enquiry via askUCL under the Request for Hall Fees Instalment Plan category and complete the form.
Reporting a faultLet us know of any maintenance issues as soon as you can. Simply talk to your Hall Team or contact them via askUCL and they will assist in progressing any maintenance issues.
If you find a serious fault or require emergency maintenance, please contact your Hall Team immediately via phone or in person at the front desk, or contact UCL Security via the SafeZone app/call +44 (0)20 7679 2222.
Find out more about opening a UK bank account: What documents you need, what services are available digitally and in local bank branches.
NoiseYou will need peace and quiet to study, and so will your neighbours. Please be mindful of sound levels.
You may think you’re not making much noise, but if someone is trying to concentrate or sleep, sound can be very annoying.
Noise must not be audible between 11pm-8am and at any time during UCL exam periods
Pay directly in the laundry room via the payment terminal or download the Circuit Go app. The app allows you to store receipts, get support via LiveChat and check machine availability from your room.
You’ll need a bag or basket to carry your washing and detergent.
Be considerate of others and free up the machines as soon as your cycle has finished. Set a timer so you know when to collect your washing.
For your safety, ask the SRAs or Hall Team to show you how the appliances work, or ask for an instruction manual.
Waste and recyclingUCL is committed to reducing waste and recycling as much as possible. Find out how to recycle in your hall.
SustainabilityUCL works with students to embed sustainability throughout our campus and culture. Find out how you can get involved with a passionate community creating change at UCL and beyond.
Drinking waterTap water in the UK is of high quality and purity. It is safe to drink water from any tap in your hall, unless labelled otherwise.
Locked out?If you are locked out of your room during the day, speak to the Hall Team at the main reception.
If you get locked out at night, use the SafeZone app to contact UCL Security. You can also call the Security Team on +44 (0)20 7679 2222.
If you’ve lost your phone or it’s out of battery, you can always get 24-hour support from the security lodge at the main entrance on Gower Street.
For everyone’s safety in our halls, all residents must follow our fire safety procedures and know what to do during a fire or fire alarm.
In your first week, you must complete 2 activities:
- Attend a fire walk.
- Complete the Fire Safety Form on the UCL Accommodation Portal.
The following all pose a significant fire risk and must not be brought into halls:
- Anything with a flame - candles, incense sticks, fragrance burners, joss sticks, aromatherapy burners, hookah and shisha pipes, oil lamps, fireworks, and barbecue equipment.
- Electric vehicles - e-Scooters, e-Bikes, e-Unicycles, or similar items.
- Large electrical appliances - portable heat equipment, 3D printers, and humidifiers.
- Small electrical appliances - plug-in air fresheners, fairy lights (other than those which are battery operated), overseas electrical adaptors, and unfused adaptors.
- Smoking - vape pens, hookah pipes, ‘bongs’ or similar paraphernalia producing smoke or vapour.
View the full list of prohibited items in the General Regulations and visit our Fire Safety page for more information.
Your UCL user ID and password was set up as part of pre-enrolment. All information from your department and central UCL teams is sent to your UCL email account.
If you have any access issues, contact the Information Services Department on +44 (0)20 7679 5000.
Do you have a UK bank account? If not, it’s a good idea to open one. This will help you manage your money more easily and safely. We strongly advise against carrying large amounts of cash or keeping money in your room.
To open a UK bank account, you’ll need a letter from UCL confirming your student status. This is called a Statement of Student Status. You can download it directly from Portico after you are enrolled.
Find out more about opening a UK bank account, including what documents you need and what services are available.
Register with a GPDon’t wait until you feel unwell. It’s vital you can access the right health care when you need it. Sign up with a doctor or General Practitioner (also called a GP).
We recommend you register with your local GP which can be found using the NHS GP finder tool.
Are you a non-UK student? To work in the UK you’ll need a National Insurance (NI) number which you can apply for online. If you’re a non-UK student on a student visa, there are restrictions on how many hours you can work. Make sure you stick to the terms of your visa.
UK nationals should have received their NI number at age 16. Learn how to apply.
SIM Card
For non-UK students, we strongly encourage you to put a local SIM card in your phone. This will make local and international calls cheaper. You’ll need to update your UK SIM number on Portico.
6. Wellbeing & CommunityWellbeing supportBeing a student can be difficult and stressful. If you need support or guidance, you’re not alone. Whatever your reason, there are people at UCL who can help: Student Residence Advisers (SRAs); your tutors; your departmental Student Adviser, and Student Support and Wellbeing Services (SSWS).
- Schedule a non-urgent appointment with your SRA.
- Contact SSWS via askUCL or by visiting the first floor of the Student Centre.
- Your GP (doctor) can also help with a wide range of health, personal, social and emotional issues.
SSWS has a team of expert wellbeing, disability and mental health staff, who are here to provide a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space to discuss any issues that may be affecting your ability to study.
Student Residence Advisers (SRAs)SRAs are postgraduate students who live with you in halls and are there to support your wellbeing and help build the hall community. They offer peer-to-peer guidance and can signpost you to UCL support services. SRAs are on duty between 6pm to 8am on weekdays, and 24 hours on weekends and bank holidays.
FlourishSRAs run a calendar of events in your home to help you meet new people and make friends! Find out what Flourish events are coming up.
7. Travel in LondonFind your way aroundWe encourage you to explore the Bloomsbury and UCL East campuses! As a student, you also have access to study spaces such as the Senate House Library, the British Library, and more.
There’s so much to do in London. Check out the hall card in your Welcome Pack to see a list of recommendations from previous residents and start discovering your local area.
Use Google Maps, Citymapper or TfL Go to find the best routes for getting around London.
Get a Student Oyster photocard or Student Railcard. These give you money off standard fares on the Tube and buses with Transport for London (TfL). You can also use a contactless credit card or bank card on public transport. Remember to always touch in and out with the same card, and consider travelling by bus where possible - it’s cheaper than the Tube.

9. Your SafetyGeneral RegulationsWhen you finish reading this booklet, read through the General Regulations for living in UCL Accommodation! These cover all the rules and important information for students living in UCL Accommodation.
Fire alarmsFire alarms are tested once a week. If the alarm lasts more than a minute, or happens outside of the weekly test time, leave the building immediately.
If you have an emergency, call 999 for the Police, Ambulance Service or Fire Brigade. This is a free service. You should also inform the Hall Team or SRA team about any emergency, as soon as you can.
Stay safeLondon is a big, and generally safe city, but be wary of strangers. You should keep your door locked and secure at all times.
Always have your card ready in your hand when you approach a security door and ensure the door is closed behind you. Be mindful that you don’t unintentionally allow someone without access to enter the building, this is called tailgating.
If somebody has followed you through and it doesn’t feel right or if you find a suspicious stranger in your hall or flat, report it to UCL Security, your Hall Team or an SRA right away.
Be wary of phone snatching by criminals using bikes and mopeds. Protect your possessions by staying alert and being careful when using your phone outdoors.
SafeZone AppUse the SafeZone app at any time to contact UCL Security in an emergency on campus and in your hall. This is particularly helpful outside of your hall’s office hours. Download the app now so it’s there if you need it.
