About Taran

What was your experience of further or higher education like?

I really enjoyed my time at university but also found it challenging at times. I was the first of my family to go to university so didn’t know what to expect. I talked to university staff about issues I was having and this helped a lot with making my experience easier and more enjoyable.

Who or what made the biggest positive impact on you when you were studying? And how did they support you?

I got involved in societies in my first year and the people I found there were an incredible support network for me, I’m still friends with them now! It was great to be part of a community where I could discuss issues that were important to me but also have a source of support from my peers as well.

What working achievements or initiatives are you most proud of?

When I was a student, I was also LGBTQ+ Officer and campaigned for more gender neutral bathrooms on campus and a gender neutral dress code for Graduation. I was really pleased to help more students and staff feel comfortable whilst at the university.

If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

There are no stupid questions, so don’t be afraid to ask them!

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I used to work at a museum when I was a teenager, and have helped to catalogue letters written by Jane Austen and Lord Byron!
