Who am I?

About Sania

What was your experience of further or higher education like?

I was a first-generation FE and HE student in my family, as well as being the eldest sibling and cousin. I had no-one to turn to for advice apart from teachers and friends. Teachers told me to choose something I enjoy and something that would give me the skills I need for my profession. My teachers were above and beyond supportive, but we had no 'Support Services' that were dedicated to IAG, so a lot was left to us alone. HE (Undergraduate) was hard for personal reasons, but I loved my subject. I loved my campus and staff were amazing. But my Postgrad was FAB! I learnt so much, and because I lived in student accommodation this time I learnt so much about the world too.

Who or what made the biggest positive impact on you when you were studying? And how did they support you?

My teachers made a huge impact on me. They supported me and opened my eyes to a world I didn't know could exist for me. They gave me the courage and knowledge to spread my wings and trust in myself. Not only that, but they also helped explain things to my parents - to put their fears at ease and to understand the world of Education better, which in turn meant better support for me.

My friends were so important and a vital support network for me - their experiences helped me shape my own ideas and views.

My determination, resilience, patience and drive also made a big impact on all areas of my life, during and after studying.

What working achievements or initiatives are you most proud of?

First and foremost, I am proud to be a successful, professional, Muslim woman who comes from a difficult journey. I am proud of myself for achieving my Postgraduate Diploma whilst working 3 part-time jobs whilst supporting myself and my family. I am proud to have made it to a Student Adviser in HE, and even better is that it's UCL - it feels like all my hard work paid off.

If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

I would tell myself that it's okay to take risks and to not know 'what I want to be when I grow up'. I would tell myself to enjoy as many experiences that give me worthwhile skills, and to follow my gut.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

It will surprise people to know that I enjoy a range of outdoor activities, such as Camping and Hiking. I hope to be able to do a Skydive in Dubai next year. This is a surprise because usually around the office I am known as 'Sparkle Princess' - because I quite enjoy my Disney movies, and you can usually find me wearing something sparkly/colourful, heels and dresses.
