You can join us in the Institute of Education Building, room 102 - Drama Studio, at 2-3pm on 24/01/2024. We hope to see as many of you there as possible so we can all beat the winter blues together and have some fun!

Exam Season Toolkit - Wellbeing Corner and Plant Shop - 13th March from 14:30-16:00

Come down to our free plant shop this March and take a well-deserved break from your revision! We will be giving away free plants to students in the MAPS faculty (one per student and first come first served), to brighten up your rooms, help reduce stress, and have a positive impact on your mental health over the exam season. You will be able to socialise with your fellow students and unwind over a chat about plants!

You can join us in the Institute of Education Building, room 102 - Drama Studio. All the Student Advisers within the faculty will be present to have an informal chat about anything exam related, or anything else you would like to discuss.

Who am I?

About Ryan

What was your experience of higher education like?

I studied at the University of Leeds for both my undergraduate and master’s degree in history and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. For me, my university years were fun and formative, and I really enjoyed being in the company of friends who were studying disparate but equally interesting subjects. As the first in my family to go to university, I was really excited by the opportunity to experience higher education and a new city and my time in Leeds didn’t disappoint.

Who or what made the biggest positive impact on you when you were studying? And how did they support you?

I was very fortunate to have a close-knit group of friends whilst I was studying, who were all equally passionate about their degree programmes. This was really helpful when it came to batting ideas around in preparation for an essay, practicing presentations or even just getting motivated to get into the library during exam season - or it was when we weren’t engaged in house table tennis tournaments! Having a mutually supportive peer group was hugely beneficial for me whilst studying and had a profoundly positive impact on my time as a student.

What working achievements or initiatives are you most proud of?

I’m particularly proud of the work I did in undergraduate admissions whilst working as a teaching administrator in Physics & Astronomy. By working closely with our admissions tutor and our excellent team of student ambassadors, we were able to put together a programme of recruitment events and open days which were consistently well reviewed by our offer holders, and which led to us increasing the number of female students on our programmes to above the national average – a trend which I hope continues over the next few years.

If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

I had a fantastic time at university, but if I were to give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be to make the most of the opportunities available to you as a student, whether related to your degree programme, career opportunities or your hobbies. Your time at university is unique in that you can decide to pursue almost anything that interests you in one way or another and that isn’t an opportunity that should be wasted!

What would surprise people to know about you?

People might be surprised to know that I’m a huge hip hop fan (especially 90s and early 00s hip hop) and I actually wrote my master’s dissertation, in Modern History, largely on 90s hip hop collective, the Wu Tang Clan.
