About Paloma

What was your experience of further or higher education like?

I came to the UK ten years ago for my Undergraduate at UCL. I then did my MA and PhD at the University of Warwick. When I came to London, it was the first time I lived by myself, away from my parents, brother, pets, and friends. Although it was sometimes an overwhelming experience, I enjoyed my years and journey in higher education immensely: I met many interesting people, made some very good friends, and created a new life for myself.

Who or what made the biggest positive impact on you when you were studying? And how did they support you?

During my PhD, I had two incredibly supportive supervisors. Not only did they support me academically (they always provided extensive feedback on my drafts), but they also made sure that I grabbed all the opportunities that would help me develop as a scholar and as a person. Even after finishing my PhD, I have kept in touch with both of them and update them regularly on my life post PhD.

What working achievements or initiatives are you most proud of?

I worked as a prison officer for a few months. Although it was a tough role and an even tougher environment, I am proud of the relationships I created with the prisoners, relationships based on mutual respect. Working as a prison officer made me realize that I am capable of achieving a lot more than I originally thought.

If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

I would tell myself that things get better and never to give up: to appreciate all the changes (even if at the time they seem insuperable) and to acknowledge the feelings that come with these changes.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I love going to conventions! I have been several times to Comic-con and have always cosplayed.
