What I do

Hi, I’m Chrissie. I am the Student Adviser for the UCL Medical School within the Faculty of Medical Sciences. I am here for you as a key point of contact during the first year of your undergraduate studies. I am available to discuss any wellbeing, support, and student experience matters.
Who am I?
- About Chrissie
What was your experience of Further/Higher education like?
A very steep learning curve. I studied German and International Relations at Warwick. However, during my first term, imposter syndrome kicked in. I very quickly went from being high achieving at a small sixth form in rural Wales to feeling totally exposed among my fellow first years, many of whom seemed more confident, more prepared and more knowledgeable. As student from a WP background, I felt as though I didn’t belong and - as opportunities to discuss these thoughts with the faculty were scarce (at that time) - I eventually withdrew from my course.
My family/friends were instrumental in helping me to reframe my perspective of ‘having failed’ as one of ultimately having made a positive decision. I returned to university the following year much better prepared and completed my BA in English Studies at the University of East Anglia.
What do you like most about your work as a Student Adviser?
I am very new to the role/faculty (at UCL) but I have worked as a Student Adviser, caseworker and coach at other universities. In this role, no two days are the same - because no two students’ learning journeys are the same.
Whilst some themes that arise may be more common than you think, there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ reason to speak to an adviser. We know that life and studies overlap and you are free to book an appointment to use the space to bring whatever you would like to discuss, free of judgement or expectation.
As an adviser, my focus is to support you in clarifying your need and supporting you in either working towards a resolution, or in accessing further specialist support if needed.
What's a surprising or interesting fact about yourself?
I’m a bit of a history geek and love archaeology. I have a Thames foreshore license, which permits me to ‘mudlark’ at low tide. I’m always being asked if I’ve found any treasure, but I’d make a rubbish pirate: Treasure to me is holding an old bit of London history in my hand - my small tatty Roman pot handle with embedded thumbprints and a worked Mesolithic flint are just a few of my most treasured finds.
