Advice about what to look for when you choose your modules.

The first (and most important) task is to read your department's guidance about choosing modules and the information on Portico. Your department will let you know what options are available to you, if applicable.

As you consider the modules you might choose, talk to your Personal Tutor about your aspirations and interests.

When you've made a list of modules, you should:

• Check if the module has any restrictions via the Module Catalogue.
• Consider the dates for key activities and assessments. This is especially important if you prefer to spread your workload even across each term and across the whole year.
• Look for modules that provide a healthy mix of content and activity
• Think about which modules relate to your career ambitions. Don't worry about making a wrong choice from an employers’ perspective though. A recent study by the Institute of Student Employers* found that only 14% required a specific degree subject as part of their selection criteria. Focus is much more on skills and attributes, experience, and motivation for the company and role.
• From 8 April 2024, if you are on a programme with optional modules, you will be able to view and select your options via the My Studies page on Portico.
