Timetabling

What does a red border mean in the draft timetable?

A red border indicates that there is a clash between compulsory events (i.e. two teaching events happening at the same time, where there are no alternative event times you can attend for either module). Do not submit your saved module selections if you have a clash. Change the module selected, save and re-check the timetable.  Your department may be able to provide additional information to help you understand your timetable. If there is a clash please check with your department before making your selections.

What does a blue border mean in the draft timetable?

In-person teaching events have a blue border with events at UCL East highlighted by a dark blue, thicker border. Click on the location icon for each timetable event to view the location in google maps. If you have events at different campuses on the same day, you should ensure that you have sufficient travel time. We recommend you allow an hour to travel between UCL Bloomsbury and UCL East, if you have additional accessibility needs you may wish to allow longer.

What does a yellow border mean in the draft timetable?

This indicates that the event will be delivered online.

What does the multiple events label mean in the draft timetable?

This means that there are two or more of the same event running at the same time for a module. If you select this module you will be allocated to one of the groups.

All module subgroup events are showing in the draft timetable, what does this mean?

If you can see multiple subgroup events for one of your modules e.g. Tutorials 1, 2, 3, 4… you will only need to be able to attend the events for one of those groups.

What do ‘unknown events - non-modular’ mean?

Events unrelated to modular teaching can be attached to a degree programme, or even a whole department. If you see such an event and are unsure what it is, please speak to your programme administration team/administrator in the first instance.

I cannot see an event for a module in the draft timetable, what should I do?

Please contact the teaching department in question. They will be able to advise what events will be running for this module. You can locate module contact details via the Module Catalogue.

Should I print my timetable?

Please do not print your timetable. Timetable information may be updated and is subject to change. We encourage students to check their timetable regularly to see if there are any changes.

Module selection

When does module selection open?

Module selection for continuing students opens from 8 April to 17 May. New students joining for the 2024/25 academic year can select once they have completed pre-enrolment, module selection will open on the 9 September.

What will I be able to select for 2024/25?

Look at the information provided by your department to find out more about your programme of study for next year. See Read up about your programme for more information. If you have optional module choices, you will be able to check the UCL Module Catalogue for 2024/25 from 14 March. You will then be able to select modules from 8 April to 17 May within MyStudies on Portico.

I am a continuing student. How do I select my modules?

Please see Log in to Portico to select your preferred modules.

I have not received the email about continuing student module selection. What should I do?

Please log an enquiry with askUCL and a member of Student Records will look into it and get back to you.

The link I received via email is not working. How can I access module selection?

Log in to Portico and click the My Studies tab at the top of the page. Visit the My Modules section which contains:

  • a link to the module registration task (if you have modules to select)
  • a link to the UCL module catalogue
  • details of your current module selections

Please note: If your programme does not offer a choice of modules, your modules will be automatically added to the My Modules section of Portico.

I can’t see the link to select my preferred modules. What should I do?

You will not have access to the module selection link if:

  • Your programme does not offer a choice of modules (i.e. you modules are all compulsory). However, you will be able to view your modules for 2024/25 by scrolling down to the My Modules section.
  • You have already submitted your module selections for the year. However, you can make changes to optional and elective modules up to 17 May. You will be able to request amendments to selections once again from 15 to 29 July.
  • If the above do not apply to you, please log an enquiry with askUCL.
The module I want is not available for me to select. What do I do?

Please contact your home department who’ll let you know whether you can select the module in question. If you are eligible for the module, they will contact the central Student Records team who will update Portico so you can select it.

I have submitted my preferred modules but want to make a change before the deadline. How can I do this?

Students can make changes by logging into Portico and navigating to the MyStudies tab from 8 April until 17 May. We know that some students may need to change their modules later in the year. In some circumstances it may be possible to request a change to your module selection from 15 July. We will do our best to support students to make alternative selections where needed. However, please bear in mind that it will be harder to secure your place because all initial allocations will be complete.

What happens if I need to amend my module selection after the 17 May deadline?

You can make amendments to optional and elective modules up to 17 May. In some circumstances it may be possible to request a change to your module selection from 15 July. We will do our best to support students to make alternative selections where needed. However, please bear in mind that it will be harder to secure your place because all initial allocations will be complete.

How do I know if my selected modules have been approved?

You will receive an email on 15 July after modules have been approved. You will then be able to visit the My Modules section on Portico to check the approval status of your module selections.

What happens if I've been declined for any selected modules?

We try to maximise the number of students who are accepted on to their first choice of modules but, unfortunately, it's not always possible. With over 50,000 students across UCL, and the complexity of the programmes and modules we offer, it is inevitable some selected modules are declined. These decisions must be considered final. If this happens, you will be able to select an alternative module in the My Modules section on Portico from 15 to 29 July.

I’m currently on interruption. When will I be invited to choose my modules?

If you have some outstanding assessments to take from before your interruption (i.e. first attempt resits) and are attending other modules after the interruption which relate to the same year of study, these are automatically updated on the record and you do not need to take part in 2024/25 continuing student module selection from 8 April to 17 May.

If you are due back from interruption before 17 May 2024 and are returning in 2024/25 to take your next full year of study, you will be invited to take part in module selection from 8 April to 17 May.

If you are due back from interruption after 17 May 2024, you will be invited to select from 15 July or you can contact your department for assistance.

I have received the email about module selection for 2024/25 but am interrupting my studies for 2024/25 so won't be here. What should I do?

Please ensure you have submitted your interruption application. Once it's approved, you will be notified of its approval and we will remove you from module selection for 2024/25.

I am changing programme or route next year. What should I do in terms of module selection?

If you’ve had approval for your programme or route change, please contact your home department who will be able to assist you with module selection, so your modules are correct for your intended programme in 2024/25. If the decision for your programme or route change is pending, please contact your department after a decision has been made.

I have received an email about continuing student module selection but I will have left next year. What should I do?

Please log an enquiry with askUCL and a member of Student Records will look into it and get back to you.

I am a modular-flexible student and don’t intend to select any modules for the next academic year. What do I do?

We are introducing a new Portico task to allow modular-flexible students to report they will not be selecting modules for the upcoming academic year. When you complete this task, you will ‘opt out’ of all module related communications and requirements.

I am an intercollegiate student, how do I select modules?

Students external to UCL should follow the procedures for module selection at their home university. UCL students wishing to select an intercollegiate module should refer to Intercollegiate Study page for further information.

I am on Study Abroad programme, when should I select my modules?

You will be able to select your modules from 8 April to 17 May.

When do students with a January start date select modules?

Continuing students with a January start date will be asked to select modules on Portico for the upcoming academic year from mid-December 2024.

New students starting their programme of study in January 2025 will be asked to select modules on Portico for the upcoming academic year from mid-December 2024.

Students should contact their home department if there are questions/issues with their module selection records.

I didn’t select my modules in April, when does module selection re-open?
