Returning to your studies after interruption

This page provides information about the return to study and re-enrolment process

Starting the return process

We will contact you via email from three months before your return date inviting you to log in to Portico and confirm whether you intend to return to your studies. You must complete this action as soon as possible and no later than one month before your return date. Failure to do so may lead to delays to your re-enrolment and could result in your UCL student record being closed.

You must select from one of the following three options:

Confirm your return to study on your agreed return date

Once you confirm your intention to return, you will receive a confirmation email with a Return to Study checklist (also listed below). You can also view and update your progress against this checklist on Portico (go to the My Studies tab on Portico, click on Returning to study checklist in the Change of Circumstances section). Please note that this checklist is intended as a guide to help you prepare for your return - it is not mandatory to tick off all activties on your checklist but be aware that your department will be able to view your checklist progress and may contact you to offer support if key actions are not marked as complete.

1. If you require a Return to Study Wellbeing review, our Student Support and Wellbeing Services (SSWS) will contact you to confirm what is required. This must be completed before you can be invited to re-enrol. Visit our Return to Study Wellbeing review webpage for more information.

2. Student visa holders only: You must obtain an new Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the Student Immigration and Compliance team, in order to apply for a new Student visa before you return to UCL.

3. Visa holders (non Student visa type) only: You should confirm your ongoing visa status by uploading copies of your current passport and visa to the "Visa and ID Document upload" section on Portico.

4. ITE / MBBS students only: You will need to complete an Occupational Health assessment and new DBS check prior to re-enrolling. UCL will not charge you for these checks but you may incur an additional charge if using the DBS update service

5. Re-enrol online. You will receive a separate email one month before your return date inviting you to re-enrol via Portico.

We encourage you to consider that you will not be able to enrol until your record is re-instated, and you have paid the appropriate tuition fees, or provided evidence of sponsorship You must re-enrol within two weeks of your record being reinstated. Failure to re-enrol may result in the closure of your student record

6. Check your Student Contact Details are up to date on Portico (on your MyPortico tab).

7. Check the fees that you will be due to pay from the date of your return. These must be paid when you re-enrol or soon after. For all fee enquiries, please visit our Pay your fees webpage.

8. Make funding arrangements for your return. Visit our Fund your studies webpage for more information or email studentfunding@ucl.ac.uk. You can also find practical advice and tips in our Manage your Money Guide.

9. Make accommodation arrangements if required. Visit our Accommodation website to find out more about applying for UCL halls or making arrangements for alternative accommodation.

10. Review your Reasonable Academic Adjustment arrangements (if applicable) - If you have Reasonable Academic Adjustments (previously known as a SoRA), check that these still meet your needs. Find out more about Reasonable Academic Adjustments.

11. Check timetables and module changes (when available) on your MyStudies tab on Portico, or if you wish, you can contact your department to discuss.

12. Plan for assessments - identify any assessments due shortly after your return and schedule study time accordingly.

Apply for a further interruption

Interruptions cannot be extended. If you want to interrupt for another year, you will need to confirm that you wish to apply for a new interruption on Portico and also submit a new application on Portico before your return date.

Second interruptions require a higher level of approval, and you will need to provide a Statement of Need and supporting evidence. Please see the Interruption of Study procedures in the Academic Manual for more details.

Withdraw from your studies at UCL

If you are not sure about resuming your studies following your interruption, your department or UCL Student Support and Wellbeing Services can help you to look at your options. There are many ways in which UCL can support you to continue your studies.

If you decide to withdraw, please visit the withdrawing from your programme webpage for more information.
