Introducing the UCL Harm Reduction Policy
15 November 2024
UCL is replacing a zero-tolerance approach to drugs and alcohol with a Harm Reduction Policy. The policy document produced by UCL Student Support and Wellbeing Services and UCL Students’ Union became policy in Summer 2024.
Harm Reduction
Unlike zero-tolerance, harm reduction works to reduce the harms associated with drug and alcohol misuse or abuse.
Our new policy contains a set of practical strategies to provide education and specialist services to support all UCL students. This includes staff training, educational activities and a new dedicated webpage on support for drug and alcohol misuse or addiction.
We are working closely with the Changing Unwanted Behaviours (CUBE) Clinic, a specialist NHS mental health service within the UCL University Clinic, utilising their expertise on referrals, assessments and treatment options.
Student voice
As we enter the implementation phase in partnership with Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK), our policy must directly address the wants and needs of our student body. We would love to hear your thoughts and experiences with drug and alcohol use at university and harm reduction.
Share your opinions through the Harm Reduction Policy survey for the chance to win £100. You do not have to drink alcohol or use drugs to take part. The survey is run by SOS-UK. UCL will have only received anonymised data.
The survey is open for three weeks – from Monday 18th November until Sunday 8th December 2024.
Don’t miss your chance to shape our policy and have a chance to win a prize.
We hope to hear from you soon!
