16 September 2020

Welcome to UCL. You’ve probably read that phrase a lot over the past few days, but did you know that your welcome into our community extends far beyond your first week here?

This year is going to feel a little different to what you’ve experienced before. Alongside your introduction to UCL, COVID-19 means you’ll be introduced to new ways of learning, socialising and even living. The first six weeks of term will be crucial to settling in, so we’ve put together a six-week programme of events, blogs, talks and tours to welcome you to life at UCL - and to help you make the most of it.

Alongside your academic department, there are loads of additional services that make UCL a vibrant and supportive community. These services are here to support you, to help you begin your career journey, to connect you with other students and to help you reach your academic potential. Over the next six weeks, we’ll introduce you to all of them.

Here’s what’s happening...

UCL Life - Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October

This week will help you settle into your new surroundings, meet new people, find groups to join, attend events and learn about what makes UCL such a special place.

UCL Support and Advice Services - Monday 5 October to Friday 9 October

We’ll introduce you to the many different ways you can find support at UCL - particularly around safety, finance, disability and mental health, counselling, studying abroad and lots more.

Look out for interactive events throughout the week.

Your academic self - Monday 12 October to Friday 16 October

During this week you’ll learn how to develop strategies for academic success, structured around four daily activities that are key to student life; reading, writing, planning and talking.

There’ll be events throughout the week, and lots of online resources to get stuck in to.

UCL Careers and Alumni - Monday 19 October to Friday 23 October

UCL Careers and Alumni have so many different ways to support your career aspirations. From careers fairs, to UCL’s global Alumni network, to interview and CV advice, to job opportunities. It’ll all be covered in this week.

UCL Culture - Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October

World-class museums, galleries, collections, performance spaces - you’re never far from an enriching cultural experience at UCL and during this week you’ll found out how to make the most of it all. Look out for events, games, talks and more.

London - Monday 2 November to Friday 6 November

By November, you may have explored some of the places that make London one of the world’s greatest cities, but during this week we’ll help you dive deeper into the city and help you form a long-lasting connection to our capital.

Learn about volunteering, jobs, and the kind things you only know after spending years exploring London’s best bits.

How to make the most of it all

All of the events, talks, guides, videos and fairs are open to everyone. No matter what level of study you’re at or the type of studying you’re doing - these first six weeks will help you make the most of UCL.

Look out for the latest events appearing on UCL’s social media, on the new students website and across campus.
