Get into sport, get into TeamUCL

10 September 2020

Meg, your elected Sports Officer, gives you an introduction and welcome to the TeamUCL community this year.

TeamUCL is the sporting community at UCL, which encompasses 75 membership-based sports clubs. Joining one of these clubs is a cheap way to get involved with sport at UCL, meet like-minded people, make new friends and release some of the stress of university life.

Whether you are an elite athlete or a complete beginner, TeamUCL has something to offer.

For those of you that want to play competitive sport, all clubs hold regular training and fitness sessions and there are plenty of opportunities to compete in our London University Sports Leagues (LUSL) and British Universities & Colleges sports (BUCS) leagues.

For those of you that do not want to compete, many clubs also offer social sessions, such as social Badminton and Tennis, and there are also a number of sports which are non-competitive in nature, such as Climbing and Mountaineering and Hiking.

Over the 2019-20 season, TeamUCL surpassed 6,000 members for the first time and once again defeated Kings College London Student’s Union (KCLSU) in the annual London Varsity Series, with a final score of 21-15. This is one of the favourite events in the TeamUCL year as our clubs come together to compete with friendly rivalry whilst honouring our Varsity values of excellence, enjoyment, respect, discipline and competition.

For me, getting involved with TeamUCL from the very start was the best decision I ever made. I came to UCL as a very overwhelmed fresher, but by joining UCL Netball club and getting involved with as many opportunities as I could, I made a strong network of friends, settled into university life, loved my sport and became your Sports Officer this year.

Now more than ever, it is really important that we stay connected, stay healthy and support one another, and so I encourage you to tune in to our Digital Welcome fair this September and find a new sport or a sport that you love.

Without TeamUCL, my whole UCL experience would have been completely different. I hope that TeamUCL can positively transform your university experience too.

Check out our club and society directory to find the sports club for you. If you can’t find the sport for you, and want to set up your own club email TeamUCL.

Make sure to tune in to the Digital Welcome Fair on September 30 and October 3 and follow us on Instagram and Facebook
