Welcome to your Students' Union

1 December 2020

Our friends over in Students Union UCL are taking over the Countdown to UCL blog this week to tell you all about how your Students' Union works and all the ways you can get involved!

Welcome to the union

At the Union we help you do more at UCL, we’re the place where more happens.

Good news - you’re automatically a member of Students’ Union UCL, but what does that membership get you? We’re your route to over 300 Clubs and Societies, countless volunteering opportunities, events, great places to eat, drink and chill in, an Advice Service when you need it, and if you want to make lasting change at UCL, we can help you do that too. Now that you’re a student at UCL, you’ve got access to all the wonderful things we have to offer, it’s automatic, and we hope you make the most of it.

We’re a not-for-profit organisation led by students (you can meet the seven Sabbatical Officers leading the Union this year here) which means you’re at the heart of everything we do. It means that every penny you spend in one of our cafes, bars or in our gym goes back to providing great services for you. Have a read through to see what we can do for you.

We’ve got plenty of news, events and information on our Welcome page.

Volunteering

There are literally 1000’s of ways for you to do more and make a difference during your time here, and while you’re at it, you’ll be adding valuable stuff to your CV, giving back to the communities you’re living in and discovering London in a unique way. Our Volunteering Service is here to help you start a journey, whether you’re looking for a remote volunteering opportunity or something in the community with us you can find a volunteering opportunity led by students, a one-off project or community organisation that needs your time.

Find out more about volunteering here.

Sports

Thousands of students stay active through the Students’ Union. Look out for Project Active if you want something ad-hoc and low-key, TeamUCL if you want to follow your passion for a particular sport and compete in leagues nationally, and our Elite Athlete programme for those at the top of their game.

Clubs and Societies

Tea Appreciation Society welcomes those who drink their tea with their pinkie up and down but if tea isn’t your thing we’ve got more than 300 other Clubs and Societies for you to choose from. These are groups that will help you make friends, pursue your hobbies and add extra skills to your CV.

Read more on clubs and societies here.

Help and Advice

Life isn’t always easy but we’re always here to give you support when you need us. We’re here to care about the things you care about, and fight for you when you need someone in your corner. If you need help or advice - we’re here.

Student Voice

We’re all in this together, and when we say ‘we’, we mean everyone at UCL; students, academics, support staff. What UCL is now and what it’ll be in the future is down to us, the UCL community. Your voice is central to the progress UCL makes; feedback about your experience, be a rep and work in partnership to make change, shape UCL as UCL shapes you.

Find out more about the Student Voice.

Places for you

We’re not-for-profit which means that every penny we make in our cafés, bars, gym and shop goes back to you through the services we provide; all the ones we’ve just listed above are funded by your daily coffee - thanks! Our spaces are your spaces and places we hope you’ll call home.

Find out more about the spaces for you on campus.

There is so much to the Union, that we can’t describe it all here - you have to experience it for yourself.
