Police registration

There is no longer a requirement to register with the police when entering the UK to study and live here.

Police registration requirements suspended

As of Thursday 04 August 2022, the requirement to register with the police was suspended by the UK Home Office. This means that international students who would previously have to register with the Overseas Visitors Records Office, no longer have to.

Answers to FAQs

I have booked a police registration appointment and will be attending later in 2022/2023. Do I still need to attend?

No, you do not need to attend and you do not need to cancel your appointment. This has already been done as part of the suspension of police registration.

I am arriving in London to start studying in September 2022. My visa documents state that I need to register with the police. Do I still need to register?

No, you do not need to register. The suspension of police registration means that the requirement to register with police on your documents no longer applies.

I have already paid my fee to register. Will I get my money back?

No. The fee you paid to the police is to cover the cost of administering and processing your application to register when the requirement to register was still applicable.

I have an appointment to register, and I have not yet paid the fee. Do I still need to attend and pay to complete the registration?

No. The Police Registration Scheme has been suspended. You do not need to attend a police registration appointment or pay a fee.

I have received an email, call, text or other form of communication stating that I need to register with the police

This information is outdated or may even be a scam. The police registration requirement has been suspended so the UK Home Office should not be sending this information to anyone. If you receive communication asking you to regster and therefore pay, please contact UCL through askUCL and we will be able to advise.
