Personal and emotional support

Find out who you should contact if you need personal and/or emotional support during your time abroad.

Personal issues

For personal and emotional issues, your first point of contact will be your host institution or employer. If you are studying at a university, there may be services available such as a health centre or counselling service. If you are unsure of what is available to you, try contacting the International Office or Study Abroad Team at your host uni for advice. We also ask that you inform the Study Abroad Team as soon as possible of any issue that could be having an impact on your studies.

If you cannot find help in your host country, please remember that UCL is always available to support you. If you do experience difficulties of any kind, no matter how small, please contact the Study Abroad Team or your Study Abroad Tutor for help and advice.

Global Student Assistance Programme

The Global Student Assistance Programme provides practical information, resources and sign-posting to other services, as well as short-term counselling on a variety of topics. Information can be provided over the phone, via email, or by post. Short-term telephonic counselling, if appropriate, is also offered at a time convenient to you.

Visit our page on the Global Student Assistance Programme for details.

Support websites

The UCL Student Support and Wellbeing website contains information and contact details for UCL support services available to you. On their website you will also find self-help resources which can be useful in helping you understand the issues you are deadling with, which is in turn a useful step in dealing with them. They may provide a solution in themselves, they may raise questions you'd like to explore with a therapist, or they may supplement other forms of help you receive.

Nightline

If you just need someone to talk to, the London Nightline team are available during UK term time. Because they work from 6pm-8am, this can be useful to you even if you are in a different timezone. As well a phone service, they offer Skype and IM, so it won't cost you a penny.
