My year abroad experience has gone beyond Madrid! Join me on my travels around different Spanish cities.
Hola from España! My study abroad experience in Spain took an unexpected turn due to visa issues, but it turned out to be an unforgettable adventure nonetheless. Stuck within the confines of this vibrant country for seven months, I embarked on a journey of exploration that took me far beyond the streets of Madrid where I reside. Join me as I unravel the treasures of Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada, Valencia, Toledo, Barcelona, Salamanca, and Malaga.
Sevilla: The Heartbeat of Andalusia
Sevilla, the capital of Andalusia, welcomed me with open arms and flamenco beats. I visited the Casa de Guitara where I watched my first ever live flamenco show and was mesmerised. While admiring the stunning Moorish architecture of the Alcázar of Sevilla and exploring the iconic Plaza de España, I felt like I was stepping back in time. I went to Seville on a weekend trip where I also visited Cordoba and Granada.
Cordoba: Where Cultures Collide
In Cordoba, I found myself amidst the remnants of the Islamic, Christian, and Jewish civilizations. My highlight was visiting the Mezquita, the architecture was incredible and unlike anything I had ever seen before and the streets of the Judería captivated me with their historical charm. Wandering through these ancient alleys, I felt like I was walking through a living museum.
Granada: A Glimpse of Al-Andalus
In Granada, I couldn't secure tickets to the Alhambra, but the free viewpoint at Mirador de San Nicolás offered breath-taking views of the majestic palace. The Granada Cathedral, with its stunning architecture, was another highlight of my visit. But what truly stole my heart was the culinary experience - a five-course meal for just 12 euros! And let's not forget my first taste of vermut, which I absolutely loved.
Valencia: Where Modernity Meets Tradition
Valencia, the birthplace of paella, offered a delightful mix of modernity and tradition. Exploring the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences and the historic Old Town was a feast for the senses. During a memorable girls' trip to the Albufera Nature Reserve, I immersed myself in the beauty of nature with my classmates from Spanish class. Back in the city, we enjoyed lively street festivals, indulged in delicious street food, and sampled local delicacies like horchata.
Toledo: The City of Three Cultures
Toledo, with its labyrinthine streets and towering fortress, felt like stepping into a medieval fairy tale. The Alcázar and the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca offered glimpses into the city's rich multicultural heritage. Exploring these historic sites, I was in awe of the city's fascinating history.
Barcelona: A Feast for the Senses
Barcelona, a city pulsating with life, offered an eclectic mix of art, architecture, and gastronomy. The whimsical creations of Antoni Gaudí, from the Sagrada Familia to Park Güell, left me spellbound. Strolling down La Rambla, I indulged in delicious tapas and soaked in the vibrant atmosphere of this cosmopolitan city. However, I did also get robbed on the metro so please definitely buy the phone strings and wear your phone on you to avoid that if you go.
Salamanca: Where Time Stands Still
Salamanca, with its golden sandstone buildings and prestigious university, exuded an air of elegance and intellect. The Plaza Mayor was the perfect spot to people-watch and soak in the city's ambiance and journal . Exploring the illuminated cathedrals and ancient alleyways at night was a truly magical experience.
Malaga: The Coastal Gem
Lastly, I had the opportunity to visit Malaga, the vibrant coastal city known for its rich history and beautiful beaches. Exploring the historic centre, I admired the Malaga Cathedral and the ancient Alcazaba fortress. Spending a day lounging on the golden sands of Malagueta Beach was pure bliss even though it was February and quite cold. My highlight was arriving at 7am in the morning and watching the sunrise on the beach.
As I prepare to bid adiós to this beautiful country, I carry with me memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. From the lively streets of Sevilla to the sandy beaches of Malaga, each city has left an indelible mark on my heart. España, ¡te quiero!
