Tuition fee free summer places

This summer, Study Abroad will once again offer a range of tuition fee free opportunities at partner institutions through our Tuition Fee Free Summer scheme!

Over the summer of 2022, a number of tuition fee free places will be available on global partner summer schools. We hope that these will be available in-person, but please note that this will be contingent on the global situation as well as guidance from UK, international governments, UCL and the host institution.

Details of the specific institutions and programmes available can be seen below. Some of the opportunities are only available to students from certain departments or faculties, so you will need to check your eligibility before you apply.

Application instructions can be found on the information sheet below. The application deadline is Friday 21st January 2022 at 23.59pm. No applications will be accepted after this date.

2022 Summer programmes:

Zhejiang University Virtual Innovation and Entrepreneurship Global Summer Camp

Programme description: The Zhejiang University (ZJU) Innovation & Entrepreneurship Global Summer Camp is a unique three-week program which offers participants an opportunity to understand entrepreneurial China in one of China's most dynamic growth areas.

Through exposure to the knowledge sets covering different facets of entrepreneurship, you will gain an understanding of what innovation and entrepreneurship look like and mean. Working with peers through facilitated group discussions, you will be tasked with creating a business initiative to fine-tune the ideas you are itching to turn into reality.

Please note that this programme will be offered virtually.

City University of Hong Kong Summer Research Internship Program

Please note that due to the surge of COVID-19 cases, City University of Hong Kong have decided to cancel its Summer research Internship Program.

Programme description: The Colleges of Science and Engineering have an overseas internship scheme to provide students with an opportunity to experience scientific research related to their studies. In addition to the research experience, additional cultural workshops and an industrial visit are provided to give participants a brief understanding of industrial establishments in Hong Kong as well as a taste of Chinese culture. The programme aims to provide students with the opportunity to conduct a research project which will expand their horizons and allow them to apply their knowledge in  a practical setting.

Eligibility criteria: non finalist undergraduate students from UCL Engineering and Physics departments only.

Dates: 6th June - 5th August 2022

Costs:

  • Tuition fee – waived for selected UCL students
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, activities and admin fees expenses – students are expected to cover these themselves. Please see the institution’s website for details.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology International Summer Exchange Program

Please note that due to the surge of COVID-19 cases, HKUST have decided to cancel its International Summer Exchange Program (ISP)

Programme description: The HKUST International Summer Exchange Program (ISP) welcomes students from our partner institutions to study at HKUST in the summer on tuition-waived, exchange student basis. The program aims to create a rewarding exchange experience for students from around the world. It comprises high-quality courses taught by regular HKUST instructors and opportunities to participate in local excursions that enable students to gain insight into the region.

Eligibility criteria: non finalist undergraduate students from Engineering departments (not including Computer Science).

Dates: 20th June – 13th August 2022

Costs:

  • Tuition fee – waived for selected UCL students
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, activities and admin fees expenses – students are expected to cover these themselves. Please see the institution’s website for details.

University of Hong Kong Summer Institute

Programme description: HKU Summer Institute, aims to bring student outside of the campus and into the world. Multiple programmes have been linked and created with partner schools and will be able to provide a chance for students to engage on a multi-culture journey. By embarking on the global adventures, students will be able to meet new friends and be able to widen their networks on a global scale.

Further information:

Eligibility criteria: non finalist undergraduate students from Engineering (not including Computer Science), LAWS, Planning, Anthropology, Geography, Economics and Arts and Science (BASc)

Dates: Vary depending on programme selected.

Costs:

  • Tuition fee – waived for selected UCL students
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, activities and admin fees expenses – students are expected to cover these themselves. Please see the institution’s website for details.

Tecnologico de Monterrey iSummer Mx programme

Programme description: iSummer MX is a program designed for international students who love traveling and learning about new cultures.

Students will live in four vibrant cities in Mexico. The Santa Fe district in Mexico City, the colonial city Queretaro, the industrialized Leon and the modern business and industrial center in Monterrey. They will make everlasting memories exercising their intellectual curiosity and developing entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership skills, in a multicultural setting. During their stay in Mexico, students will learn about different parts of the country without ceasing their studies. Each campus has special activities, with field trips, company visits and networking events that will make their experience unforgettable.

Eligibility criteria: non finalist undergraduate students from Engineering departments (not including Computer Science).

Dates: July 2022 – dates TBC

Costs:

  • Tuition fee – waived for selected UCL students
  • Students still liable for the service fee which includes accommodation, transport within Mexico and breakfast ($1600). Students are also expected to cover their own flights and visa costs.

National University of Singapore FASStrack Asia Summer Programme

Programme description: FASStrack Asia comprises of Asia focused courses from the Faculty’s Asian Studies Division, Humanities Division and the Social Sciences Division.

With Asia in the world’s spotlight as it undergoes rapid growth, the summer programme will tap into NUS' research strengths in the region and offer students an enriching knowledge and understanding of various Asian-related topics and issues. Taught over a four-week summer period, students will attend classes, participate in active discussions and learn from academic experts specializing in their area of study. Besides NUS students, FASStrack Asia also welcomes university students from Singapore and all over the world to join the programme to enhance cultural exchanges and diversity of the programme.

Please note that the majority of courses are now to be offered virtually, but there is one course that will run in hybrid format for those who would like to travel to Singapore. More information about the modules available can be found here.

Zurich University of Teacher Education Summer School

Programme description: The Zurich University of Teacher Education (Padagogische Hochschule Zurich - PHZH) Summer School provides insight into the Swiss education system, its opportunities and challenges. The programme lasts between one and four weeks (depending on courses taken) and is open to students in educational sciences and/or teacher education who have completed at least one year of full-time study. The courses available in 2022 are listed below.

27th June - 1st July 2022 -  Special Needs and Inclusive Education in a Global Context
4th - 8th July 2022 - Violence Prevention in Schools
11th - 15th July 2022 - Special Needs and Inclusive Education (individual coaching)
11th -15th July 2022 - The Digital Transformation of the Classroom

Costs:

  • Tuition fee – waived for selected UCL students.
  • Participants will have to pay a fee to cover the cost of the welcome and social programme as well as local transportation costs. This fee will vary depending on the number of courses undertaken. Travel, visa, accommodation, activities and admin fees, expenses – students are expected to cover these themselves.

National Chengchi University  International Summer School

Programme description: In 2022, NCCU ISS will provide eight English-taught academic courses in the fields of East Asian Studies and Taiwan Studies. These two programs will provide participants with a panoramic view of multiple facets of East Asia and Taiwanese societies and provide insights into their unique the positions in international community. Also offered is a four-week intensive Mandarin course, conducted by the NCCU Chinese language Center.

Dates: 1st - 30th July 2022

An additional opportunity is also available to non-finalists at the University of Gothenburg. However, the application for this is separate as there is no guarantee of acceptance from Gothenburg if you are selected and nominated by UCL. Tuition Fee Free FAQs

How do I apply for the scheme?

The application is through Portico and will be visible to eligible students under the global mobility tab. Detailed application instructions can be found on the information sheet above.

Can I apply for any of the programmes listed above?

Some of the opportunities are department or faculty specific, so please check the eligibility criteria above before you apply.

I'm only interested in one summer programme. Do I still have to select three choices on the Portico application?

No, if you are only interested in one opportunity, it is fine to list just that. Please only list choices that you will be prepared to accept if offered.

Can postgraduate students apply?

No, the tuition fee free scheme is only available to non-finalist undergraduate students.

I am in the final year of my undergraduate degree - can I apply?

No, the tuition fee free scheme is only available to non-finalist undergraduate students.

I am in the third year of a four-year MSci or MEng programme - can I apply?

Yes.

I am currently on interruption - can I apply?

If your interruption ends before the start date of the programme, you will be welcome to apply.

When will I know the outcome of my application?

The applications will be reviewed once the deadline passes and you will receive the outcome of your application in February.

What happens if I'm offered a place?

If you are awarded a place, you will first have to confirm that you wish to accept the place. You will then have to complete a second application for the institution you have been nominated to. Study Abroad will guide you through this process and we expect your place to be confirmed providing you complete and submit your application in advance of the deadline we will outline.

What about COVID-19?

We hope that the majority of the opportunities will be available in-person, but please note that this will be contingent on the global situation as well as guidance from UK, international governments, UCL and the host institution.There is a chance that a programme offered in-person may switch to a virtual offering or be cancelled if the situation requires.

I applied last year and was awarded a place that was cancelled due to COVID-19. Do I need to apply again?

Yes, if your place was cancelled last year, you will have to apply again but you will be welcome to use the same application responses if you wish. If possible, we will also take into account the situation last summer when reviewing the applications and making allocations.

If my place in 2022 is cancelled due to COVID-19, can I be considered for 2023 instead?

If you are awarded a place for the summer of 2022 and the programme is cancelled due to COVID-19 or you cannot attend due to travel restrictions, you will be welcome to apply again a year later for the places available in 2023 providing you are still a non-finalist undergraduate student. The options available and the number of places we have at each partner varies each year, so we're unable to defer places from one year to the next.
