Returning to UCL

If are feeling a bit overwhelmed at the thought of coming home, here are some things you should think about to help you get organised for your return.

Accommodation

Finding accommodation for your return to London is a concern for many year abroad students. It is important to remember that there are over 400 students on study abroad every year, so it is more than likely that you will find others in your boat. For information and advice on finding accommodation for your return to London, please visit UCL Accommodation

Re-enrolling and Module Selection

Please remember to re-enrol on Portico when you return from your year abroad. Failing to re-enrol by the deadline can affect your access to UCL services and late re-enrolment can incur a fine. Make sure to check your UCL email over the summer for information about when you can re-enrol.

You may need to select modules for your final year during your year abroad. If you have any queries about this process, please contact your Study Abroad Tutor for guidance.

Careers Information

By studying abroad it is likely that you have developed skills which will be very attractive to potential employers. As part of our welcome home for returning year abroad students, the UCL Study Abroad Team in tandem with the UCL Careers Service will run a careers workshop in October designed specifically to help you to present your year abroad achievements to employers. You can also consult the UCL Careers Service independently for advice on your CV and guidance for job applications.

If you need inspiration to start thinking about where you might like your career to take you, why not have a look through the amazing resources that Global Graduates have put together for returning students, including interesting opportunities for students with international experience both in the UK and abroad.

Support UCL Study Abroad

As students currently abroad, you now know how valuable the personal insights of other students can be when you are making decisions about your year abroad. To help bring this to others, we hope that you will join us in the autumn term at some of our events for outgoing students. You may be asked by your department to participate in briefing meetings for 2nd year students, or you may be invited to assist at our annual Study Abroad Fair, held in October, which will give you a chance to represent your institution abroad to other prospective study abroad students.

Your contribution is always appreciated, as there is no one better placed to relate first-hand experiences of the year abroad - your feedback may well help to give other students the courage and enthusiasm to take part in the programme. Your overseas uni will also appreciate you helping to raise their profile and encourage more students to join them!
