Starting your degree

Arrival issues

We want to ensure your arrival is smooth, you find accommodation, and you get ready for your degree. The MSc programme tutor is Dr Simon Lock (email). He's the first point of contact should you experience difficulties on your arrival.

Induction week

STS has organised a week of events as part of your induction to the programme. This is the week 23-27 September 2013.

The schedule for Induction week is now downloadable here.

During our induction week, you'll meet the staff, tour the facilities, and receive a variety of materials useful for study. By the end of the week, you should be settling into the programme.

PGT Tutor Induction Session, 23rd September - Presentation

Module registration

For information on module registration go to the Module information pages, you can also download Simon's PowerPoint presentation from the PGT Induction session, which covers module registration instructions above.

Preparing for the start of teaching

Classes start in the week beginning 30th September, for information on how to start preparing for your compulsory core module (HPSCGA01) see here.

Virtual learning environment

STS makes use of UCL's virtual learning environment, Moodle. Once you've enrolled, you'll have access to the system for all your modules. This will contain reading lists, assignments, readings, and a variety of other materials.

STS reading list

STS prepared a list of work we think is central to MSc-level education in our fields. Details.

This doesn’t list everything one might want to read in a subject, but it’s meant to be a good start. It samples from the library of work we regularly use in our programme. In preparation for your studies, you should read some of these.

Let us especially encourage you to read across all categories. These lines are drawn arbitrarily, and your degree will make good use of interdisciplinary connections. UCL Library will have copies of these in our Teaching Collection.
