Students Meet Our Alumni
1 February 2012
Current students were treated to expert advice from STS alumni at a special careers event organised by the department on 24 February. Former students shared their insights on what a degree in STS can do for you in the job market, as well as how to make the most of extra-curricula activities to 'shine up' your CV and make sure it stands out from the crowd. Careers represented included a trainee solicitor at a top City law firm, science policy advisor at the Royal Society, academic researcher at King's College London, Assistant Curator at the Science Museum, and a current PhD student who had recently successfully obtained studentship funding in a highly competitive environment.
The students who attended reported gaining in confidence, reassurance and
support from knowing that although the path is not always smooth or obvious, STS graduates are valued in a wide variety of careers. Attendees were also entertained by the frank and honest advice provided, and greatly valued the opportunity to chat individually with various alumni in an informal manner. A big thanks to our alumni Marie-Claire Hawthorne, Emily Dawson, Tom McGuffie, Charlotte Connelly and Steph Ratcliffe for their input on the night.
Within STS we are proud of our distinguished alumni now employed in a very
wide range of roles. Many are more than happy to chat to individual students and offer advice and insights. Contact the Careers Officer (Karen Bultitude, firstname.lastname@example.org) or visit our dedicated careers website for more information.
