STS Research behind EPSRC Statement

14 October 2013

Following a piece of research conducted by Jack Stilgoe and colleagues, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council has just published a statement outlining their 'framework for responsible innovation'. The statement says that 'innovation can raise questions and dilemmas, is often ambiguous in terms of purposes and motivations and unpredictable in terms of impacts, beneficial or otherwise".

Following Stilgoe et al's four dimensions of responsible innovation (anticipation, reflexivity, inclusion and responsiveness) EPSRC describe the need to 'Anticipate, reflect, engage and act (AREA)'. It will be interesting to see how this is taken up in scientific areas from synthetic biology to robotics and beyond.
