STS Careers Q&A
22 February 2019
STS held a Careers event for students on Weds 20th February, with a host of STS alumni giving their insight into how to develop a career after graduation.

"Careers advice" is one of the most frequently requested items from STS students, and so in order to provide better guidance, the department invited former STS students, and those working in STS related fields, to talk to current students about the path they followed after graduation. Our speakers were:
Alice Bell - Director of Communications at 10:10 Climate Action
Gwynne Dixon - Client Support, Engaging Networks
Lucy Turner - Wellcome Trust Graduate Scheme
Zoe Grunewald - Houses of Parliament Graduate Fast Scheme
Andrew Crawley - Associate Director, Faithful + Gould Construction
The event began with brief introductions from the panel, and some general questions from panel chair Melanie Smallman around their early career steps, before a Q&A session led by the assembled students. Questions covered topics such as the charity sector, getting into journalism, alternatives to journalism for skilled writers, the benefits of travelling and temping, and many more.
The event was recorded, and some edited highlights will be made available later in term 2. The event was such a success that we plan to run it again in subsequent years - if you're a former STS student and would like to take part, or you have suggestions for people who might, please contact us at sts@ucl.ac.uk.
