The power of the Internet

Sustainability 6

Sustainability Team 6 focus on digital energy sustainability and a greener approach to the Internet.

Listen to the podcast

The team say...

"We live in an increasingly digital world, and the energy cost of internet use alone is more significant than many people know. We highlight a few areas in which engineers and the larger public can make a difference in managing energy use, from renewable energy sourcing at data centers to elastic computing techniques in the cloud to smart metering. Digital services come at a high energy cost and it’s our duty to make them greener through awareness, moderation, and advancing research."

Sarah Engel

Dylan Hutchison

Dylan is a PhD student at the University of Washington. He builds large-scale data processing systems atop strong mathematical foundations under the supervision of Bill Howe and Dan Suciu. His ongoing thesis relates two data models---Linear Algebra and Relational Algebra---in order to build systems that combine the benefits of both. He collaborates with colleagues from academia as well as IBM, Intel, and the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and he is grateful for fellowship support from the National Science Foundation.

Sarah Barr Engel

Sarah studies Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Energy Systems at Cornell University, and studied Sustainable Development at DIS in Copenhagen. Through Engineers for a Sustainable World, she has designed and built a system to generate electricity from riding a bike and is working to build a small-scale savonius wind turbine. She has previously done research in microbial fuel cells and the global carbon cycle. In her non-existent free-time she is working to explore every gorge in Ithaca.
