Celebrating Professor Julius Mugwagwa's Inaugural Lecture
4 March 2025
This inaugural lecture, titled "Localisation matters: a journey with the life sciences, innovation and public policy'" was given by Professor Julius Mugwagwa following his academic promotion to Professor of Health Innovation and Public Policy at UCL STEaPP.

On 26th February, Professor Julius Mugwagwa reflected on his academic journey, from his roots and being raised in Zimbabwe to his time at UCL. His Inaugural Lecture illuminated how his career via education in the life sciences, veterinary research, the pharmaceutical industry and the broader science-technology-and-society interface, set the intellectual constructs for his current and future research, knowledge exchange and teaching interests in innovation and development broadly and specifically health innovation and public policy.
It was an inspiring evening filled with insightful discussions, and it was fantastic to see so many colleagues, students, and guests, both in person and online engaging with these ideas. A big thank you to Professor Joanna Chataway for the introduction and Professor Yacob Mulugetta for closing the event on such a high note! Julius shared his gratitude, saying:
I would just want to say thank you to everyone who attended - in person and online - to wish everyone well in their journeys and for those interested to watch out for exciting developments on some of the concepts I talked about, especially 'policy metabolism'.“

An Inaugural Lecture is a momentous occasion, honouring the promotion of our esteemed colleagues to professorship, marking a significant milestone in their academic journey. This historic tradition is a key part of university life, offering a platform for our newly promoted professors to present their pioneering research and contributions to their fields.
We at STEaPP were delighted to be celebrating alongside Professor Julius Mugwagwa and we're excited to be a part of his journey as it continues. If you would like to hear more about Julius' work you can access the recording of his Inaugural Lecture below, or you can keep up to date with his research here.
