Benedikt Schmidt

Hear from our recent graduate Benedikt on his experience studying on the Health, Technology and Public Policy MPA.

What were you doing prior to starting the STEaPP MPA?

Headshot of alumni, Benedikt Schmidt

Before joining, I studied in Switzerland, first completing a medical degree during which I realised my broader interest in health policy, ethics, and the societal role of science. This led me to additional studies in mathematics and philosophy and to work at Reach, a Swiss think tank focused on science, society, and politics. My experiences there, alongside roles in the Swiss government and multilateral development banks, strengthened my commitment to a career at the intersection of science and policy, with additional work in research translation, where I focused on bridging science with industry and the economy.

Why did you choose to study at STEaPP?

I chose STEaPP because it offered a dedicated department focused on the intersection of science and policy, which is rare among master’s programs. Unlike similar degrees housed within other departments, STEaPP’s distinct emphasis on public administration aligned closely with my interests. I was particularly drawn to the public policy perspective over the government-business nexus often seen in other programs. Additionally, studying in London offered a unique opportunity to connect with a diverse, international community—valuable for a policy degree that incorporates varied case studies.

What was your favourite aspect of the MPA?

My favorite aspects of the MPA were, first and foremost, the other students. They were incredibly interesting, supportive, and eager to connect, creating a collaborative and friendly environment. Second, I appreciated the flexibility in electives, including options outside of STEaPP, which allowed me to tailor the curriculum to my interests. Lastly, the accessible and informal relationships with staff were invaluable; their networks and insights were especially helpful for planning my next steps after the MPA.

How has the STEaPP MPA shaped your experiences since leaving UCL?

The STEaPP MPA expanded my network within science and policy, particularly in science advice, which was the focus of my final project. Through the MPA, I gained a deeper understanding of the field, its institutions, mechanisms, and career pathways. Additionally, the experience of collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures was invaluable and something I hadn’t fully experienced before.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to future candidates?

My main piece of advice would be to socialise with the other students and to reach out to staff, especially if their work aligns with your interests. Also, bring your own perspectives into discussions—share your ideas, organise small events or discussions, and, if possible, focus your final project on a topic you’re passionate about.
