The US tariff policies will have major implications, not just Indonesia but the entire Global South. By imposing the tariffs, the US shifts its fiscal burden onto trade partners, triggering a domino effect: emerging markets face export declines, currency pressures, and capital flight as investors flee to safer assets. Commodity-dependent economies in Africa and Latin America risk revenue shocks, while manufacturing hubs like Vietnam and Bangladesh confront supply chain disruptions and job losses. Meanwhile, advanced economies—including the EU and Japan—may retaliate in a more significant sense, escalating trade fragmentation. For countries like Indonesia, the immediate risks include a weaker exchange rate, the rupiah, and slower growth, but the broader lesson is clear: reliance on US demand is unsustainable. Join us for this evening seminar where Mr Samirin will talk to this development and offer scenarios that include deeper regional collaborations, domestic stimulus, and diversified trade networks to weather the coming storm.
Mr Wijayanto Samirin is a seasoned economist, public policy expert, and senior adviser with extensive experience in politics, public and private governance, finance, and academia. Currently serving as an Independent Commissioner at PT. Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison Tbk. and Senior Adviser to the Indonesian Employers Association (APINDO), he has previously advised Indonesia’s Vice President and the Governor of Jakarta on economic transformation and strategic policy. A Fulbright scholar with a Master’s in Public Policy from Georgetown University, Wijayanto has authored four books and over 100 articles on economics and development. He is a sought-after commentator on global economic issues, appearing on international media such as Reuters, Al-Jazeera and CNN Indonesia.
