The 2022 African Economic Outlook (AEO), the African Development Bank's flagship publication, was released in May 2022. The theme for this year's report is Supporting Climate Resilience and a Just Energy Transition in Africa. The report highlights climate change as a growing threat to lives and livelihoods in Africa.
Despite contributing to a negligible 3% of cumulative worldwide CO2 emissions historically, climate change and extreme weather events disproportionately affect Africa, with severe economic, social, and environmental consequences for its people. The African Economic Outlook makes it clear that the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war is placing additional burdens on African economies and livelihoods across the continent.
This would mean Africa sinking deeper into crisis or use the climate and global economic crisis as an opportunity to rethink Africa's development journey. Professor Urama will reflect on these issues and open up a new conversation around climate and development. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with Professor Urama, Antony Simpasa and Professor Yacob Mulugetta.
